Creed 3 director and star Michael B. Jordan explained why Sylvester Stallone won’t be returning as Rocky Balboa in the next sequel. In the first two Creed films, Stallone’s Rocky served as a mentor to Jordan’s Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky’s old friend Apollo Creed. Most fans were probably expecting the Italian stallion to return alongside Jordan for Creed 3 too, but it was revealed last week that Rocky wouldn’t be involved.
At the time, no reason was given for Stallone’s absence in Creed III, but Jordan has since provided an explanation. Speaking about the situation in a recent conversation with IGN, here’s what Jordan had to say when asked why Rocky wouldn’t be in the new movie.
“Yeah, I think Sly made it known that he wasn’t coming back for this one but I think, you know, his essence and his spirit … there will always be a bit of Rocky in Adonis. But it is. a Creed franchise, and we really want to build this story and this world around it to move forward. So it’s still respect and still love shit for what he’s built, but we really want to move Adonis and the family he created forward. So, I hope you’ll love what I think … what we’re up to. I think it’s gonna be something special. “
With Rocky outside at Creed 3, it is not known if and when we will ever see the iconic character again. In 2018, Stallone posted a video to Instagram saying goodbye to the iconic role. In reference to Creed 2 like his “last rodeo”, Stallone left a heartfelt farewell message to the franchise he helped create in legend.
“I just want to thank everyone around the world for taking the Rocky family to their hearts for over 40 years,” Sylvester stallone wrote. “It has been my ultimate privilege to have been able to create and play this meaningful character. Although it breaks my heart, unfortunately it all has to go … and end. I love you kind and generous people, and the thing is. the most wonderful of all is that ROCKY will never die because he lives in you … “
Since then, Stallone has made efforts to bring back the character of Rocky Balboa in one way or another. He expressed his desire to make a new Rocky film that would be part of the separate original series from the Creed movies. Designed as an “epilogue story,” the film would follow an old Rocky who takes a young fighter under his wing for a big fight south of the border. Stallone was still working on the film last year, but he had yet to get the official green light.
Last month, Stallone also said he was working on a Rocky prequel series that would take place in the years leading up to the original film. Sly says the plan is to produce multiple seasons, but as with the planned Rocky sequel, he has not yet officially received the order to start filming. In the meantime, Stallone recently wrapped up his Director’s Cut of the acclaimed sequel. Rocky iv, so fans will at least have that to look forward to.
As for Creed 3, the film’s release is currently scheduled for November 23, 2022. This news comes to us from IGN.
