Vanya and Lila are the most powerful characters in The Umbrella Academy, but who takes the #1 spot? Let’s take a look at their powers.
The Umbrella Academy came across another superpowered human when they met Lila, and they had a hard time fighting against her, but her unique powers raised a big question: who is more powerful, Lila or Vanya? Based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy debuted on Netflix in February 2019 and was an instant hit, surpassing one of the streaming giant’s most popular TV shows. The series was renewed for a second season shortly after, with the new batch of episodes arriving in July 2020.
The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves, seven adopted siblings who along with other 36 babies were born on the same day, at the same time, and under the same mysterious circumstances. This event caught the attention of scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who set out to adopt as many of those babies as he could, but he only got seven. As they all developed superpowers, Reginald trained them and formed the team known as “the Umbrella Academy”, but the kids ended up parting ways. The Hargreeves reunited years later for Reginald’s funeral and to stop the apocalypse, but they failed at it and their only way out was jumping to another place and point in time – and that’s how they came across another of the 43 babies, who turned out to have some very dangerous powers.

The Hargreeves landed in Dallas, Texas, but on different dates between 1960 and 1963. They eventually found each other and reteamed to stop another apocalypse, but in the process of reuniting, each one started to rebuild their lives. Diego (David Castañeda) ended up in a mental institution where he met Lila (Ritu Arya), who turned out to be The Handler’s (Kate Walsh) adopted daughter and one of the 43 babies, and thus also has superpowers. Lila showed her talents in The Umbrella Academy season 2’s finale, where to the surprise of the Hargreeves (and the audience), she revealed that her superpower is to mimic those of others in close proximity, so she was able to teleport while battling Five (Aidan Gallagher), “rumored” Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) into almost dying, showed superhuman strength when fighting Luther (Tom Hopper), and more. Of course, she also mirrored Vanya’s (Elliot Page) powers, which she used against the Umbrella Academy.
Vanya’s powers are related to sound, as she can manipulate sound waves and convert them into energy and physical force that she can use in different ways, most notably telekinesis, flight, and force-field generation. Her powers are linked to her emotions, which is why in The Umbrella Academy season 1 she had no control over them and triggered the apocalypse, but in season 2 she had better control of them and was able to work alongside her siblings. Vanya is considered the most powerful and dangerous member of The Umbrella Academy, but when it comes to comparing her power to that of Lila, it can be tricky to determine who is the most powerful. Vanya’s weakness is her emotions, which she still has some trouble controlling, while Lila has no such problem as she only mirrors her powers, not the source of them. With this in mind, Lila could be the most powerful, but if Vanya manages to control her feelings, she can have the upper hand.
The Umbrella Academy didn’t have enough time to explore Lila’s powers, so they are still a mystery to an extent, but as she was able to fight the Hargreeves all by herself, she might be their biggest threat to date, but she can also be an ally if she ever decides to change her path. Vanya is the most powerful member of the Umbrella Academy team, but out of all the superpowered characters introduced so far, Lila could easily take her place.
