What Deathloop’s New Release Date Is After Delay

Arkane Studios’ latest game, Deathloop, is the most recent high-profile game to suffer a delay in 2021, but it probably won’t be the last.

Much to anyone’s surprise, Deathloop has been delayed. Follow the likes of Halo: infinite, Knights of Gotham, and Return, Arkane Studios’ upcoming time-loop shooter is another victim of delays caused by issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Deathloop will now launch on September 14, 2021, approximately three months later than originally planned.

Although current global circumstances have been affecting game development cycles for over a year, the majority of video game industry complications appear to be making their mark in 2021. Many other AAA titles, such as God of War: Ragnarök and Western forbidden horizon, Also expected to be delayed, although these two games are currently still scheduled for 2021. These frequent delay announcements are particularly daunting since they came after the start of a new generation of consoles. Xbox Series X / S and PlayStation 5 – the latest of which has Deathloop exclusively timed – have so far had a lackluster game lineup to take advantage of the new hardware.

The announcement came earlier today via the Deathloop Twitter account, which posted a video featuring game director Dinga Bakaba and art director Sébastien Mitton explaining the delay. Ultimately, it’s the right move for Arkane, but it’s still disheartening as the original launch date draws near. Check out their statements below:

Expect more delays in video games throughout 2021

The pandemic has largely affected the video game industry as a whole, not just game development. The semiconductor shortage largely responsible for the unavailability of new consoles will be investigated by the Biden administration, but the games themselves facing problems are a separate issue from the hardware shortage. Studios all over the world (Arkane Lyon, the division behind Deathloop, is located in Lyon, France) must adapt to work-from-home scenarios while facing global financial challenges.

Arkane is known for its detailed game worlds, specializing in the immersive simulation genre with titles such as Dishonored and Prey, so developers not being able to directly interact with each other undoubtedly has a negative effect on creating the desired player experience. All other development studios face the same circumstances, so other video games slated for 2021 will more than likely be delayed. Deathloop is simply the most recent game to be delayed, but it promises to be only a few months behind schedule and not indefinitely, as it is shaping up to be one of the most promising releases of the year.
