Sitharaman is the first full-time woman finance minister to present the Budget. Before her, Indira Gandhi assumed the Finance portfolio after Moraji Desai resigned.

Sitharaman is also the first FM to ditch the traditional leather briefcase carrying Budget papers and adopt a red silk bag with the national emblem.

The longest budget speech was delivered by Nirmala Sitharaman. She broke her own record while presenting the 2020-21 budget, speaking for 162 minutes.

Nirmala Sitharaman broke another record in 2021—the year of the Covid pandemic—when she presented the first paperless budget. She read the speech from a digital tablet.
