Water sports in Mumbai? hell yeah!
Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari has prepared a blueprint for cruise tourism in a meeting held last week with various stakeholders from the tourism industry, with Mumbai as the central hub for the initiative. According to reports, they plan to:
1. Develop Mumbai for Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship
2. Make Mandwa a wellness destination
3. Set up floating restaurants at Gateway of India and Girgaon Chowpatty
4. To promote Mumbai as an ideal wedding destination among foreigners.
The proposed action plan is based on the idea of popularizing the Mumbai-Goa cruise, along with turning places like Sassoon Dock, Kanhoji Angre Island, Alibaug, Sewri Fort, Vijaydurg and of course, Mandwa into tourist hotspots.
The Center has already prepared a roadmap to measure the effectiveness of the scheme, according to which the number of cruise tourists is likely to increase to 4.5 million by 2042-43. Some of the measures taken by the government to promote cruise tourism in India are as follows:
- eviction fee waiver
- Offering 42-66% discount on port charges
- Providing e-Visa and Visa on Arrival facilities to cruise tourists.
