The campaign lawsuits were focused on fewer than 9,000 absentee and mail-in ballots that the County Election Board decided to count on, despite possible errors on the outer envelope. The campaign had argued that these errors, including failing to handwrite a proper name, date or street address outside the ballot-return envelope, were ineligible. But the Supreme Court disagreed.

The court also said that the campaign was not arguing that there was any evidence of fraud with these ballots.

Outside court, Trump’s lawyers and surrogates have accelerated to speed up fraud charges at the state and national levels. A lawyer, Sidney Powell, claimed without evidence that an international communist-linked conspiracy was hatched against Trump for manipulating election software. Powell was effectively fired from the Trump campaign’s legal team after making claims that immediately met with heavy criticism from both sides of the political aisle.

But while standing before a judge under oath, some people like Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani refused to argue that the election was fraudulent.

“Here we conclude that when the election fails to include a handwritten name, address, or date in the voter declaration on the back of the outer envelope in violation of a technical code of conduct, do not warrant the wholesale dissolution of thousands of Pennsylvania voters,” Justice Christine Donohue wrote in the court’s ruling.

If the Trump campaign won the case and invalidated the votes, it would not be nearly enough that Biden would theoretically cross the lead in Pennsylvania by more than 81,000 votes – even if all of the ballots under consideration had gone to Biden.

Trump now likely finds himself shielded from the federal case, to the detriment of which his campaign has appealed, in part, as his last legal shot to overturn Biden’s election victory in Pennsylvania.
