Broadcast this Sunday on TMC, Thor: Ragnarok will soon be entitled to a sequel entitled Love and Thunder. We take stock of this fourth adventure of the God of Thunder.
WHO IS BEHIND THE CAMERA?
While the Thor episodes weren’t the most beloved movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the release of Ragnarok in 2017 was a game-changer. With a more comical tone than its predecessors, the feature film conquered the press and the public.
It is therefore not surprising that the Maison des Idées proposed to the director of the latter, Taika Waititi, to return for a sequel. What the New Zealander accepted! He was also responsible for writing the screenplay, along with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
Thor: Love and Thunder will obviously have Chris Hemsworth as the main star in the shoes of Odin’s son and the latter will once again be well surrounded. Lots of familiar MCU fan faces will be in attendance, including Guardians of the Galaxy.
Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Dave Bautista (Drax), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Sean Gunn (Kraglin) and Vin Diesel (Groot) all responded positively to Taika Waititi’s call. Tessa Thompson, whose Valkyrie character was introduced in Ragnarok, will also be there, as will Jamie Alexander (Sif), who hasn’t been seen on the big screen since Thor: The Dark World.
Another great return is planned in this fourth chapter: that of Natalie Portman. A big surprise when you know that the interpreter of Jane Foster had announced a few years ago to be done with the MCU. It is the presence of Taika Waititi in the production that would have, it seems, convinced the actress to return. She has already found her character as an astrophysicist last year since she doubled it in episode 7 of the series What If…?.
Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth who camped Asgardian comedians who respectively played Loki, Odin and Thor in Ragnarok will also appear in this new opus. Also with Melissa McCarthy recruited to play a fake Hela.
Taika Waititi, who is decidedly on all fronts, will resume his role as the rocky Korg that he interprets in motion capture. A character who will always be accompanied by his friend, the giant insect Miek.
Finally, two Oscar-winning actors have joined the cast: Christian Bale in the role of the main antagonist of the feature film, Gorr the Slayer of the Gods, and Russell Crowe in that of the king of Olympus, Zeus.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT ?
If the plot of Thor: Love and Thunder is mostly kept secret, we know that it will be partly based on the arc of the comics entitled The Mighty Thor and written by Jason Aaron in which Jane Foster suffers from cancer and obtains powers similar to those of the God of Thunder. Images of the scientist in costume, Mjolnir in hand, have been circulating on the Web for a few weeks.
These illustrations also reveal Thor’s new costume, much flashier than his old versions, which could have been created by Eitri (Peter Dinklage), a character introduced in Infinity War and who could make his return in the feature film.
Valkyrie, too, should have new armor if we are to believe a snapshot shared by her interpreter on social networks. And that’s not all, the one who became the new ruler of Asgard at the end of Avengers: Endgame, should look for a queen in this new episode!
Kevin Feige promised that the character’s bisexuality would be addressed in the film. Recently interviewed by The WrapTessa Thompson has also confirmed that Thor 4 will leave room for love stories, which has not been the case so far in the MCU.
The conclusion of the latest Avengers further showed Thor going on an adventure with Star-Lord’s team, even renaming their group the Asgardians of the Galaxy. Love and Thunder should therefore, at least initially, address this new dynamic.
However, it is not yet clear how Gorr (who, in the comics, is a powerful, millennia-old alien who masters various forms of combat and possesses superhuman physical abilities thanks to his weapon of choice, the Necroblade) and Zeus will be attached to the story.
On the tone side, Taika Waititi assured that the film would be “different” and “crazier“that Ragnarok, promising”many more emotions” and “much more love”. Enough to arouse even more the curiosity of fans!
WHEN IS IT COMING OUT?
29th MCU feature film, Thor: Love and Thunder will land in French cinemas on July 13, 2022.
