The Tinder Scammer on Netflix: a mind-blowing documentary about a fake lover…

Available on Netflix, ‘The Tinder Scammer’ chronicles the mind-blowing story of a high-flying con artist who posed as the son of a Russian-Israeli diamond tycoon and defrauded millions of Scandinavian women’s dollars.

What is it about ?

Swipe, swipe, swipe… It’s not easy to find love online, so Cecilie can’t believe her eyes when she matches with a young and attractive billionaire who turns out to be the perfect match for the man of her dreams. But dreams are sometimes far from reality and when she realizes that this international businessman has lied about his identity, it is already too late: the seducer has taken everything from her. That’s when the fairy tale ends and the story of revenge begins. Cecilie identifies the other targets of the scammer and teams up with them to try to take down The Tinder Scammer…

If it’s too good to be true… It’s too good to be true!

“I think we would all like to meet someone in a bar or a grocery store. But these days, the best way is on a dating app” loose Cécilie, a 29-year-old Norwegian living in London, from the start of the documentary. If we are not obliged to fully subscribe to this vision of things, we must recognize the influence and importance of these new dating tools, the notoriety of which has exploded with social networks. Tinder precisely claims more than 6.6 million subscribers, and 75 million regular users each month.

In this breeding ground, the best rubs shoulders with the worst, of course; you have to separate the wheat from the chaff. “You need an ambitious man. It’s like Marilyn Monroe in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” says Pernilla Sjöholm, of Swedish origin. In the film, the actress sang this famous song, “Diamonds are Woman’s Best Friend”…

Pernilla does not believe so well. Simon Leviev has the perfect profile. Billionaire, of Russian-Israeli origin, he presents himself as the heir to a family business, LLD Diamonds, one of the largest companies working in the diamond industry.

Followed by more than 100,000 followers on Instagram, each photo posted of him depicts a life spent in incredible luxury, necessarily based on a private jet, flowing champagne, caviar at breakfast… A royal life gilded on edge . In addition, he is a man with a very generous heart, able to fly just for a day to cheer up the failing morale of a friend, she also met on Tinder.

From the start of his relations with his conquests, he pulls out all the stops: five-star hotel, private jet trip, sumptuous meals, VIP shopping session and coos of rigor… Nothing is too good to declare his love for that that he met. A real fairy tale, with him in the role of Prince Charming, which definitely suits him so well.

He nevertheless quickly warned of his conquest: the profession of diamond dealer, which is moreover a rich heir to a family business, is still not easy. It’s because you also have to criss-cross the four corners of the globe, always between two planes to honor your appointments, never staying very long on the spot. And, above all, it is also a job that can sometimes be dangerous…

The trap closes

The machine and the infernal trap get carried away after a month, the day Leviev sends his conquests photos of himself wearing bloody clothes, and of his bodyguard victim of an attack. He calls for help. His enemies, those who want to take control of his business, seek to make him disappear. They have already started by having access to his credit cards, from which they can trace his payments and even block them.

His victimized conquests are called to his rescue. Besides, how could they refuse, he who not so long ago still showed unlimited generosity? They therefore all multiply loans at exorbitant rates. Here, a loan of $40,000; there $25,000… Sums to be transferred to him as quickly as possible, so that he can pay his blackmailers. Its survival depends on it. Cecilie will contract $250,000 in debt with nine banks. When he feels that they have dried up enough, his relations with them become much colder, even downright distant…

Explosive investigation and bitter epilogue

Depressed and on the verge of suicide, Cecilie brings her case to the attention of a major Norwegian investigative newspaper, Verdens Gangand provided them with all his records of the history of his relationship with Simon Leviev.

Journalists then shed light on the story of a very high-flying scammer, who is actually called Shimon Yehuda Hayut. Sentenced in 2011 in Israel, he had fled the country. Sentenced in Finland in 2015 for having defrauded three women there, he multiplies the false identities (and the false papers that go with it…), and still operates according to the same modus operandi.

The fact that he never stays very long in the countries he crosses methodically allows him to slip through the cracks of the police. Even after the explosive revelations of the investigation, with a name and a face appearing all over Google and being reported to the Police in 7 countries, nothing happens…

We will not reveal to you all the springs of this investigation exposed in The Tinder Scammer; investigation which really begins after one hour, out of the two that make up the documentary. An investigation mounted like a Thriller, facing a man who ultimately swindled more than 10 million dollars from his prey. The staggering epilogue is also full of anger and bitterness…

It is also easy to understand why The Tinder Scammer is at the top of the most viewed programs on Netflix in Israel, rekindling poorly extinguished fires. Because Shimon Yehuda Hayut is the son of Rabbi Yohanan Hayut, of the Israeli airline El Al. In 2019, the latter was suspected by the country’s police of defrauding hundreds of millions of shekels to business personalities, using her son’s false identity. Shimon is definitely his father’s worthy son…

Two days after the documentary was posted online, Shimon Hayut, alias Simon Leviev, deleted his Instagram account where he had more than 200,000 subscribers. A few hours before this deletion, he had broadcast a message: “I will share my side of the story in the coming days when I have found the best and most respectful way to tell it, both to the parties involved and to myself.” Since then, dozens of fake accounts in the name of Simon Leviev have been created on Instagram, using his old photos and videos…

Asked by varietythe people behind the Tinder app said they had “carried out internal investigations” about the person concerned. “We can confirm that Simon Leviev is no longer active on Tinder under any of his known handles.” It was the least.
