The Responsibilities That Come With Having Hedgehogs As Pets

If you know what hedgehogs look like, you will agree that their unique kindness can make you want to own one. Having hedgehogs as pets can be a great experience. They are wonderful and very entertaining creatures. It is best to adopt them when they are about 6-8 weeks old and have already been weaned. When choosing, look for those with clear, bright eyes, a round body that shows great energy and alertness.

Hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures, which means they are up most of the time at night. They spend the day sleeping. If they are handled properly and their feathers are not raised, they are very cuddly and friendly. Quills are a defense mechanism that goes up when they feel threatened. But they are known to have a good temper. Most pet hedgehogs live in cages or aquariums, but under supervision, you can sometimes free them and run them around the house after they are trained in litter. Hedgehog litter training is surprisingly easy.

If you are considering adopting one, you must be prepared to take on the responsibilities of caring for a child. It may be worth noting that if you are allergic to cats, the hedgehog may not be for you. The typical care of a small animal involves time and effort. You will need to clean the animal’s cage, feed it and spend time with it. You will need to provide his needs regularly such as food, a cage, a litter box and more. It’s basically the same as having hedgehogs as pets. They love human affection. They are also wonderful swimmers. Give them a shallow pool and they will enjoy swimming in it. They make bananas to hide their heads, a game time they love so much. You can give them toilet paper tubes for this. The exercise wheel is something they love too, so put one in a cage for your pet to enjoy.

To help keep them from getting bored with the food you give, treat your hedgehogs with their favorite bananas on an occasional basis, like twice a week. You can also serve insects as they are usually insectivores. They eat snails, worms and insects found in the gardens. However, don’t just let them come off in your garden if you’re using insecticides on your plants. Plant insecticides can seriously harm them. It is best to be cautious when buying pet food specially designed for hedgehogs. These pretty balls of pleasure are prone to parasites. Milk and other forms of dairy products should never be part of their diet because they cannot tolerate them.

For those who wish to have hedgehogs as pets, they should know that to help the animal take advantage of the playing time, an additional space in the cage must be provided. Put divisions inside to make room for sleeping time or nesting needs and some areas for activity time. If you plan to keep more than one hedgehog, be sure to provide separate quarters. They love their own space because they are very territorial in nature. An additional member in his marked area could cause fights which could harm them. You should get one as young as possible and then slowly introduce the new companion without stress.

Being quiet animals, these creatures are ideal pets for people living in apartments. Since they are small, all you have to provide is a sufficiently spacious cage as they move around a lot. They make a sniffling sound when they breathe and groan or chirp from time to time when they are frightened or upset. Other than that, they are calm and peaceful. If you are the calm type and you like the company of a pet, adopting one or two hedgehogs as pets may be ideal for you.
