One look at makeup artist Robert Sesnek’s client list and you will trust everything he has to say.
If you are a fan of makeup on the red carpet, make sure Robert Sesnek is on your Instagram feed. The New York-based celebrity makeup artist is known for painting the famous faces of Hailey Bieber, Chrissy Teigen, Lucy Hale and Adriana Lima, to name a few, and when we found out the makeup artist was a go-to for German drug stores Brand Catrice Cosmetics, we couldn’t wait to ask him about his budget tips for the Holy Grail. It turned out that Sesnek had used Catrice in his kit months before the partnership began. “I really liked the eyeshadow palettes,” he says. “I did a shoot with a customer and laid out a whole series of pallets. She said, ‘Let’s try this color. ‘I had never used Catrice before and was so impressed with the pigments and the quality. It was like a domino effect. “
Here, Sesnek gives us a rundown of his bargain purchases (all under $ 15), his A-list makeup tricks, and more.
For a bargain purchase in his make-up set:
“Definitely Catrice’s HD Liquid Coverage Foundation. I try to use as little foundation as possible – I like it when skin looks like skin – and that’s where HD Foundation comes in. It really hides imperfections but still makes your complexion look like skin. You can wear it as full cover or pull it down, and it has an element of luminosity that I absolutely love. It is also very versatile: I can also use it as a concealer and contour.
The new BB Cream is almost like a treatment [for the skin] because it contains shea butter, it is moisturizing. It gets rid of redness and helps tidy everything up, but it’s not completely covered, so it’s a really easy option for everyday priming. I like to use it when trying to get rid of redness around the eyes and on the lids that a lot of people have because I treat the area while reducing redness.
And I’m addicted to the SUNGASM Face & Body Highlighter. I always like hitting the highlights of the face and all that, but my trick is to take a damp sponge afterwards and press the highlighter almost into the skin so you take away that streaky, tin man metallic look. If you press the product in with a damp sponge, it becomes almost one with the skin. “
He has created clients on some of his favorite makeup looks:
“One of my favorite customers I work with is Adriana Lima. I absolutely adore her because she’s a client who will say, “Baby, just do your thing.” We did some amazing makeup looks for the Cannes Film Festival which I think are pretty iconic and which I am very proud of. I love her with a very strong lip.
And Hailey is different. We knocked it out in Cannes the year she had pink hair. “
On a celebrity he’d like to work with next:
On the go MacGyver:
“I’ll never forget when I was in Tokyo with Hailey. We were there for five days and we did a lot of press and worked with Tommy Hilfiger. It was uninterrupted. When we landed, my makeup cases were MIA. I said, “You have to be kidding me.” I got my bags five hours later but we had to push as soon as we got there and I literally had nothing. Luckily, Hailey had a foundation, highlighter, mascara, and lipstick on her, and so these became her look.
Your foundation became a foundation and concealer. We didn’t even powder it. Not only did her lipstick change her lip color, it also became her blush and eye shadow. When I was done with that, I burned this lipstick down to the pimple! I smoothed it on the back of my hand and pressed in the paint by patting it with my finger on her lids, cheeks and lips. I let her dab her lips for a matte effect, then finished her eyes with mascara and highlighted her face with highlighter. It was a very cohesive, creamy look – and thank goodness for that perfect lipstick with rosy berries! I was really proud of what we were creating and afterwards thought to myself, “Maybe I didn’t have to bring two complete make-up cases. Maybe I could have inspired this whole journey with 10 products. ‘“
On his must-do makeup steps:
“Moisturizer and skin care, no doubt. No matter how dramatic and editorial or simple and clean a makeup look is, it all depends on the skin. Once the skin is prepared, hydrated, and hydrated, it can process all of the makeup that is applied afterwards. When I put makeup on dry skin, I get nightmares because it’s never right and always looks cake-like. That’s why I always moisturize a client’s skin and use a finishing spray like Catrice’s Prime and Fine Dewy Glow Fixing Spray after applying makeup. “
