Super Mario Bros: the surprising theory about Mario and Luigi’s other brother

Could Mario and Luigi have a third brother? This sequence from the movie “Super Mario Bros” seems to support a surprising theory developed by fans of the famous Nintendo franchise.

Dressed in a white coat, a stethoscope and a headlamp, the hero of a series of puzzle games, is the famous Dr. Mario really the same character as the famous plumber in red overalls, Nintendo’s mascot? Or is he in fact another brother of Mario and Luigi?

A third Mario brother?

Developed by fans for several years, this hypothesis according to which the Super Mario Bros siblings actually include a third brother – Dr. Mario – has recently found a new echo with the release of the animated film (which is currently a hit on the Netflix platform).

It is thanks to a sequence in the feature film developed by the artists of the Illumination studio that the theory has come back to the forefront. Indeed, at the beginning of the film, when Mario and Luigi are having dinner with their family, some claim that the little girl at the table is Mario’s niece, but that her parents are not there.

Who is Dr. Mario?

The girl’s father would therefore be Dr. Mario, and would not have been able to attend the family meeting, too absorbed in his job as a doctor. This could also help explain why Mario’s father scolds his son when the latter explains that he wants to pursue a career as a plumber, indirectly comparing him to his doctor brother, who would have been much more successful than him.

The Net Theorists add that the colours of the three Mario brothers – green for Luigi, white for Dr. Mario and red for Mario – would in fact represent the Italian flag.

The limits of theory

However, while very nice, this theory has many flaws, the first being that we have never seen Mario and Dr. Mario in the same room: everything suggests that they are therefore one and the same person. A hypothesis that is confirmed when we take a look at the game’s cover Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure on 3DS, and in which Mario AND Luigi don medical coats to eliminate viruses (see above).

What do you think about this theory that Dr. Mario is the third brother in the family?
