Leonardo Del Vecchio was born on 22 May 1935 in Milan, Italy. After spending most of her childhood being raised by nuns in an orphanage, 14-year-old Del Vecchio was forced to work in a factory in Milan. At the factory, Leonardo soon became an apprentice to an equipment manufacturer who specializes in making components for eyeglasses. Within a few years, he started studying industrial design in the evenings, while continuing to work full-time at the factory. Del Vecchio saw the potential for the expansion of the eyeglasses market, so when he was 26 years old in 1961, he moved to the Italian capital of Agordo and started his company Luxottica.
Del Vecchio has perhaps the distinction of being the first person who thought eyewear could also be a fashion statement. He instinctively understood that glasses were not just for better vision, they were also an extension of the wearer’s personality and style. By 1974, Dell Vecchio was acquiring companies to expand Luxottica’s holdings. By the late 1980s, he was establishing lucrative licensing deals.
