Samsung Galaxy S21 Series Doesn’t Come With a Charger

When you buy a new Galaxy S21 and open the box, you will find a phone and a USB-C cable. That’s it. After previously removing the included wired headset from its phones, Samsung is now dropping the wall charger from its accessory set into the box.

Just like when Apple took the leap with the iPhone 12, the reasoning is easy to understand. Samsung saves money on every phone it ships without a charger and can pass a certain percentage of those savings on to the customer – after all, the range made get cheaper this year.

Of course, there is no charger, but the Galaxy S21 is also $ 200 cheaper than the S20.

But more importantly, it’s another positive step in reducing e-waste. Before Apple even officialized its move, I advocated removing the charger from the iPhone box – and I hope other companies will do the same. Electronic waste is a huge problem that goes largely unnoticed by the public. The world produces more than 50 million metric tonnes of electronic waste per year, and only a small percentage is properly recycled. Anything we can do to reduce this amount should be applauded.

And we have to understand that although it sounds frustrating, fewer and fewer people actually use built-in chargers. Samsung says its data shows that a quarter of Galaxy S chargers are wireless. And then there’s the huge number of people who just keep using chargers they’ve already plugged in when they buy a phone. Charging speeds have stagnated, especially on Samsung phones, and any charger from the past couple of years will serve you as well as the one in the box.

Electronic waste is a serious problem that needs to be addressed, although Samsung is also benefiting from it.

Samsung says that for those who make want a shipper, he’ll lower the price of chargers in his online store and work with retail partners and carriers to do the same. Currently, Samsung’s 25W fast charger will set you back $ 35, which is frankly absurd. You can buy a pack of two 25W white label fast chargers for only $ 17, and there is many reputable charging brands making comparable chargers with better designs at similar discounts.

Not having the charger integrated is not a massive loss. You can get a much better charger – in terms of design, performance, ports, or all of the above – for a very reasonable amount of money. And you have this money because the Galaxy S21 costs $ 200 less than S20.
