Samsung Galaxy A50 review: Still one of the best budget phones

In April, Samsung announced updates to its Galaxy A-series, the family of budget phones ready to compete against apple latest iPhone SE for 2020. While some models have new features like 5G, all of them cost less than $ 400 and have headphone jacks. One of the new phones that Galaxy A51is a continuation of the Galaxy A50 from 2019.

The 2019 Galaxy A50 may not be as chic as the latest Galaxy S20 phones or looking as cool as that Z flip. At $ 350 at launch and a $ 300 discount from Samsung, the A50 is one of the top two Android phones that are under $ 400 and launched last year. (For more For phones under $ 500, see our roundup.)

That other choice is that Motorola Moto G7, which originally retailed for $ 300 (£ 189, AU $ 349) but is now available for less (Motorola currently sells it for $ 230 in the US). Over the past several years, Motorola’s G-Series has consistently proven to be our budget phone of choice, and the G7 continues that legacy as an exceptional phone for its price point.

All in all, we still love the Moto G7. It’s a fantastic affordable phone and won our editors’ choice for its affordable price, camera, and reliable performance. But I think the Galaxy A50 is better, even if it is a little more expensive. For this, too, it deserves an editorial choice. If you have an extra $ 70 to spare, go for the Galaxy A50 over the Moto G7. While it doesn’t record 4K video and I’m not a huge fan of Samsung’s One UI, the A50’s superior camera, sleeker design, and longer battery life make it a better phone.

The Galaxy A50 looks better, but has no water protection

While both phones are similar in size and design, there are a few details that set the Galaxy A50 above the Moto G7. For example, the Moto G7 has a larger camera on the back. Having a bump isn’t a deal breaker, and many phones have it, including the iPhone. The Galaxy A50’s camera is much redder, it looks flatter and slimmer. The on-screen camera’s notch for the front-facing camera is also smaller, so it’s less intrusive when looking at the display. Because the Galaxy A50 has an in-screen fingerprint scanner, the device looks more seamless overall. The Moto G7, on the other hand, has a visible reader on the back that’s decorated with the Motorola logo (and there’s also a Motorola logo on the lower bezel on the front), which isn’t that appealing.

In addition, the Galaxy A50 has an AMOLED display compared to the Moto G7’s LCD screen. Although both phones have roughly the same resolution and pixel density, the Galaxy A50’s screen is brighter and the colors are much more vibrant. Blacks are also much darker and richer in ink. If you look at both phones at different angles, the color shift is stronger on the Moto G7 as well. That means the colors will be washed out dramatically and the screen will darken in certain angles.

One advantage of the Moto G7 is that it is slightly water repellent. You can’t completely submerge it in the water, but it has a nano-coating that protects it from light splash and splash of water. Samsung didn’t add water protection to the A50.

The camera bump on the A50 is less pronounced.

Not interested in 4K video? The Galaxy A50’s camera is superior

Both the Galaxy A50 and Moto G7 take clear and bright photos when conditions are ideal, such as settings with lots of even lighting. And while the Galaxy A50 can only record 1080p video (compared to the Moto G7’s 4K max), the Galaxy A50’s camera is still ahead of the Moto G7 in many ways.

The images are sharper so you can see finer details in things like leaves and bricks. In low light, the A50 brightens and enhances the colors, while the photos taken with the G7 are muddy and have a lot of cloudy and washed-out colors. The A50 also has a wider dynamic range, which means that scenes with different lighting situations are exposed more evenly compared to the Moto G7. I’ve noticed there were times when the A50’s HDR effect looked a little too unrealistic, but I still preferred it over the Moto G7. The Galaxy A50 also has a second wide-angle camera so you can capture more content in each picture. This is useful when you also want to capture large landscapes and landscapes.
