Ryan Newman says he has no recollection of Daytona 500 crash

“I was treated medically for not knowing (about my condition.) They were trying to keep me in a medically induced coma from what I was told, and this type of medication zoned me, so I really don’t have any memories or memories of any of my accidents until my arms around my daughters get out of the hospital, “Newman said at a press conference on Thursday.

In February, Newman was leading the last lap of the race when he was involved in a fire accident which saw his car spinning and flying, knocking over several times. The 42-year-old driver was hospitalized for two days with serious but not fatal injuries.

On Thursday, he told reporters that he had watched a video of his accident after leaving the hospital and that he could not believe it.

“I watched the accident and I had to pretend I was through it,” said Newman. “I really looked at my father and said,” Hey, did it really happen? “It was like there was no dejaja when there was no deja already. It was just like,” Okay, I believe you. “It’s crazy. I I’m glad to be here. “

Ryan Newman, with his daughters, leaves the hospital after the accident.

Newman was asked about what happened inside the car that allowed him to survive, and he attributed “the safety of the race car, the safety of my helmet, my equipment.”

“They always say things happen for a reason and this year has been the year,” said Newman. “This is only the fourth race I have had on a brand new style of helmet – it is a zero carbon fiber helmet I was wearing – the second time I have worn it in Cup competition. “

He also paid tribute to the crew who helped him recover it from the crashed car.

“Everything was aligned in so many ways,” he said.

“The security guards, the personnel involved, who were inside the car with me, spent time with me during and after the accident, each layer of it had multiple miracles – great miracles and little miracles, in my opinion – that lined up so that I could go out a few days later with my hands around my daughters and be thankful, so I can’t answer all of these things and I don’t think anyone can do it when miracles happen, but we have to be thankful for it – at least I am. “

Return to racing

NASCAR returns to race at Darlington, the site of Newman’s favorite race track, and it will be his first race since his crash in Daytona. Newman will start his 22nd series of cups on Sunday at Darlington, a track on which he has 13 top 10 with seven top five.

“I hope to do each lap and one more after that,” said Newman – who was allowed to resume on April 28 – about Sunday’s next race. “I think they still have a victory lap. I was ready to do it in Daytona.”
