RuPaul’s Drag Race star D.J. ‘Shangela’ Pierce is obsessed with Instagram
D.J. “Shangela” Pierce has participated in the popular reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race three times. But in April, Shangela started alone with the new show We are here on HBO. He follows her, along with her fellow Drag Race colleagues, Eureka O’Hara and Bob the Drag Queen, as they travel across the United States to small towns in contact with people who have or have queer stories. are adjacent. In an interview on the new CNET podcast I’m So Obsessed, Shangela spoke both about the pleasure she made us here (spoiler: there is a lot of glitter) and the inspiration that ‘she drew from people she met.
“We come to these cities and not only do we connect with people, but we have to trust them and defeat them for the very first time in their lives,” said Shangela. “Sometimes in places where you don’t think the LGBTQ community is supported.”
Here We Are is both a reality show, a social experience and a drag review. Its first six-episode season ended in early June and is now available for streaming on HBO and HBO Max. Earlier this month, we are here has been renewed for a second season.
My interview with Shangela was recorded in early April. In this document, we discuss how she got into dragging, working with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in the movie A Star Is Born, the origin of her slogan, “Halleloo!” and what it is like to play in 184 drag shows as part of the Werq the World tour which presents Drag Race stars.
Listen to my entire conversation with Shangela and subscribe to I’m so obsessed with your favorite podcast app. In each episode, we meet an artist, actor or creator to learn more about their work, their career and their current obsession.
