Warning! Spoilers for Future State: Gotham #2 below!

New details have been revealed about Future State: Gotham and the Red Hood’s war against Batman’s entire family. While Jason Todd has long been a member of the Bat-Family, that all changed in the dark future of Gotham provided by Future State, which saw the entire city being turned into a fascist police state under the organization known as the Magistrate. While many members of the Bat-Family created a resistance movement to fight back, Red Hood seemingly chose to work as a bounty hunter tracking drown vigilantes for the corrupt regime. While Red Hood has always been the black sheep of the Bat-Family due to his predisposition to use guns and more lethal methods of justice, he usually answers the call whenever Batman or anyone else in the family needs his help. However, the believed death of Bruce Wayne apparently changes all of that in the future, and it looks as though he betrays his family in favor of hunting down vigilantes and anyone wearing a mask, whom the Magistrate have made illegal in Gotham. In actuality, Red Hood is a secret double agent working to take the Magistrate down from within. While there have been some teases that Red Hood is working for Bruce (who is alive and faked his death), he’s hasn’t yet blown his cover regardless of who he’s secretly working for, meaning that he’s still hunting down vigilantes to keep up appearances.

  • Tragedy has brought Gotham City to its knees. Countless people are dead, seemingly at the hands of the Next Batman. Gotham demands justice, and Red Hood has vowed to answer their call. Even if that means beating his way through Nightwing and the rest of the Bat-Family to do it.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what happens now that Red Hood will be facing not just the typical masks on the run, but his own past family members like Dick Grayson’s Nightwing or Tim Drake‘s Robin. Will Red Hood stay committed to his mission under the Magistrate and bring in his family members? Will he finally blow his cover as a double agent for the original Batman this whole time? Fans will just have to wait and see when Future State: Gotham releases this June from DC Comics.
