Popular Hair Loss Treatment Options Clear Tips

Hair loss impacts 35 million men and 21 million women, according to research conducted in 2014 by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. Only a small portion of sufferers seek treatment for their condition. However, many products and processes exist to help treat baldness.

Hair transplantationTopical or Drug Treatments

Topical or drug treatments are available, but many of them haven’t been recognized by doctors or approved by the FDA. In fact, only two such treatments have received FDA approval.

  • Rogaine – topical treatment applied directly on the balding spot. The person rubs it into the scalp to stimulate regrowth. According to statistics, only between 10-14 percent of people who use Rogaine experience regrowth. It does slow hair loss though.
  • Propecia – a pill to treat men with pattern baldness, must be continued to maintain results

These products and others may improve hair loss, but they don’t work for many people. Those that aren’t approved by the FDA may not be safe for use or come with side effects.

Hair Replacement Treatments

A long-term solution is hair transplantation, which actually includes multiple methods. The method selected will depend on the severity of the hair loss, the reason for it, and the person’s history and preferences.

Hair Grafting – also referred to as a hair transplant, is an outpatient procedure which requires the removal of as few as one or two hairs up to 30 or 40 from the back of the head. These grafts are moved to the area of the hair loss and attached. Based on the number of hairs removed, the procedure may be referred as a micro graft – with only one or two; a slit graft with four to ten hairs; and a punch graft with 10-15 hairs. Strip grafts contain up to 40 hairs and are long, thin strips.

Scalp Reduction – in this process, the part of the scalp with no hair is removed and the rest of the skin is stretched to cover the area. It’s often used on the back or top of the head, but not for front areas.

NeoGraft hair replacement – this procedure involves transferring single hair follicles from the back of the neck to the area of hair loss. It requires no cutting and is the least invasive of the options most often used. Several treatments may be necessary for more advanced baldness.

Who Can Benefit from Hair Replacement

Men who have a genetic cause for male-pattern baldness may benefit from hair replacement treatment. Some women who have a similar cause for hair loss may also be good candidates.

These treatments are also used with people who have suffered damaged hair follicles from injury such as a burn or severe fall may find these treatments beneficial. Anyone interested in this process should discuss the options with their doctor who can determine which procedure will benefit them and the likely results. Not everyone will get the results they hope for, but they can see an improvement in their condition.
