New Documentary on the Chicago Bulls Will Feature
A new documentary about the Chicago Bulls basketball team will premiere two months earlier than expected. ESPN announced that the Last Dance will premiere on April 19. The move comes due to a lack of live sports for ESPN and other networks to broadcast.
The Last Dance will air on ESPN on Sundays from April 19 to May 17. The event will also be available on Netflix outside of the United States. The series is a ten-hour, ten-part program.
The documentary is a profile of the Chicago Bulls basketball team during the 1997-98 NBA season. The event will look at Michael Jordan and many other figures from the team.
The series has been in the works for the last few years. It is directed by Jason Hehir, who also directed the films the Fab Five and the ’85 Bears as part of ESPN’s 30 for 30 series. He also directed an HBO documentary about professional wrestling icon Andre the Giant.
A Look Back At the End
The Last Dance will take a look at the Chicago Bulls and how the team became the world’s most dominant sports club in the 1990s. But much of the series will focus on the 1997-97 season, the last of the six championship years for the Bulls.
The series will look at Michael Jordan, and how he grew into the international superstar he is today. It will focus on how the Chicago Bulls struggled before Jordan arrived in 1984, and how the team was built around him.
But while the team would continue to thrive in the 1990s, the 1997-98 season was the end of it all. The documentary will focus mainly on this part of the team’s history. The team’s run for the 1998 championship will be profiled with an emphasis on how the Bulls dynasty came to an end.
Many People Appearing
Michael Jordan is only one of the many figures that will appear in the Last Dance. Teammates Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Steve Kerr all make prominent appearances. Coach Phil Jackson will also be a part of the series.
The documentary will feature new interviews and insights from all of these figures and many others. Former president and Chicago resident Barack Obama is among the interviewees. Carmen Electra, a model and actress who was married to Rodman for a brief period, will also be in the series.
Other figures who were interviewed for the documentary include Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Pat Riley, Dikembe Mutombo, and Gary Payton. Kobe Bryant also appears in one of the last interviews he gave before his death earlier this year.
Direct NBA Support
Much of the footage for the Last Dance comes from NBA Entertainment. The league had permission by Jordan, Jackson, and owner Jerry Reinsdorf to follow it around during the season to film what everyone was doing.
There is a potential that the Last Dance may answer some questions people had about the Bulls’ dynasty. These include points surrounding Pippen’s rumored aggravation over his teammates and how general manager Jerry Krause was desperate to try and keep the Bulls from breaking apart.
