Naomi Campbell: 11 memorable parades

Few models in the world can boast a career like that of the top Londoner Naomi Campbell. Since she was discovered in 1986, at 15, the top and activist has always been in the spotlight.

In 35 extraordinary years of career in fashion, Campbell has been the protagonist of an impressive series of iconic moments (and we say it with full knowledge). Among the many achievements of his career, the recognition of Fashion Icon (never a name was more suitable) obtained both at the 2018 CFDA Fashion Awards and at the 2019 Fashion Awards.

The supermodel has also been the muse of the most influential designers in the world, such as Yves Saint Laurent, Gianni Versace and Azzedine Alaïa (or ‘Daddy’, as Campbell called him) and has appeared (so far) on more than 60 covers of Fashion.

And speaking of unforgettable moments, do you remember when it ended up in the newspapers all over the world tumbling on the catwalk from the dizzying platforms (20 centimeters) to the AI93 fashion show by Vivienne Westwood? Or when he closed Paris Fashion Week with an unexpected ending amidst a riot of laser beams at the Anthony Vaccarello SS20 fashion show for Saint Laurent?

To celebrate Naomi’s 50, Fashion asked the supermodel’s closest friends and collaborators to choose their favorite moments on the catwalk.

Marc Jacobs, spring summer 87

“Naomi first walked in Miami Beach in 1987. She came out wrapped in this purple towel dress … More than thirty years have passed, Naomi is still one of my closest friends. It is really the family that I chose. “

“Gianni Versace. Andy Warhol. Naomi. There is no need to add anything else. “

Vivienne Westwood, autumn winter 1993 1994

“I think she is the most beautiful woman in the world. It was a parade in a place frequented by French people. We did three shows because it was very intimate and Naomi fell in the first show and had to do two more. Thinking about it now was perhaps one of its best moments, it was like seeing a gazelle falling in slow motion. Naomi is also an extraordinary benefactor, especially for the fight against AIDS and to help refugees. She is a true goddess: she behaves like a goddess, she makes things move ”.

Thebe Magugu: Dsquared2, AW04

“If I had to choose just one moment on the catwalk, it would be the Dsquared2 fall winter 2004 fashion show, when he ran with two huge shopping bags while a voice said:” I have a plane to catch on the fly “played at an electro-rock rhythm. When he reached the end of the catwalk, he threw the bags safely and turned around. He wore warm brown trousers, an ivory blouse with an American neckline and a green shawl coat. His ability to transform himself into the aesthetics of any designer has always been his great asset. Happy birthday, Naomi! “

Kim Jones: Louis Vuitton, menswear, fall winter 2018 2019

“As the years pass (without ever getting old), Naomi has become stronger, has more energy. And use all of this to contribute to important causes and help communities around the world. I love her for her loyalty and her sense of humor. It is an honor to be your friend. “

Anthony Vaccarello: Saint Laurent, SS20

“Naomi is a force of nature, she has gone through all these years with the same energy and the same passion. She is more than a model. It’s Naomi. Happy birthday, Naomi. “

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana: Dolce & Gabbana, menswear, spring summer 2019

“Naomi Campbell is dear friend, we have known each other for a long time. It is always in our hearts, we have many memories of life and work together. Naomi has a contagious smile, she is a truly generous and special person, and among many other things we share the same sensitivity for humanitarian causes. We joined forces for a charity project by creating a T-shirt whose profits went to Fashion For Relief. In addition to being one of the world’s greatest supermodels, she is full of energy and life, she is a sensual, true woman: she perfectly embodies the Dolce & Gabbana woman. And working with her is always a truly unique experience “!

Jeremy Scott: Moschino x H&M, SS19

“The first time I saw Naomi was in New York in 1992. I was a fashion student and I was pocketing a Isaac Mizrahi fashion show, and I witnessed what anyone who had the pleasure of seeing her live knows a lot well: that shocking moment when you see the panther Naomi walking in its natural habitat, the catwalk! After the parade, I managed to get closer and take this picture of it that I had never shown before. It would have been many years before Naomi paraded for me, as happened then for my Moschino collection for H&M, but I was able to live another very intimate moment on the catwalk, when I photographed Naomi with Steven Meisel for an adv. ”

Anna Sui, AI92

“The leather pants open behind are the thing I like most about her, it was a memorable moment when she came out dressed like that. The audience was out of breath when she turned around and everyone saw the pants open behind, and the tattoo of a rose on one buttock. It was a temporary tattoo that my assistant, Thomas “had applied to her!”

Kenneth Ize: Yves Saint Laurent, haute couture, spring 2002

“Naomi embodies the essence of a black woman: bold, strong, self-confident, vigorous, beautiful, passionate”.
