Currently available in cinemas in France, World Heroes’ Mission is the third film in the My Hero Academia franchise. A project that follows two other feature films following the apprentice heroes of Yuei in bonus adventures.
Inscribed in the temporality of the original work written by the mangaka Kōhei Horikoshi, this new part takes up the bases established by season 5 of the anime, when our protagonists, Midoriya, Bakugo and Shoto, are sent as apprentices of Endeavor in Europe to stop a terrorist group.
The opportunity to highlight the new techniques learned by our high school students, and in particular those of Midoriya who, from the start of the film, reveals an astonishing ability which is reminiscent of that of another famous pop culture hero.
As a reminder, My Hero Academia follows the daily life of Izuku Midoriya, born without power in a world where 80% of the population has one. Despite his difference, he keeps the crazy dream of one day becoming a superhero like his idol and symbol of peace, All Might. By a coincidence, the teenager becomes his worthy successor and obtains “One For All”, a gift capable of being transferred from one person to another.
If at first glance, it only seems to be a force alter, season 5 comes to turn everything upside down with new revelations. Indeed, it is during the tenth episode, during a friendly duel against another class, that Midoriya sees a whole new facet of his power awaken: the “Black Whip”.
In his unconscious, the student becomes acquainted with Daigoro Banjo, a former holder of the “One For All”, who reveals to him that the Quirk has merged with all those of the previous users. Midoriya therefore seems to be able to use several different powers.
The “Black Whip” is the first of them to reveal itself. It allows its host to create strings of energy from their hands and command them as they wish. This is particularly useful for capturing enemies and increasing your own mobility by using it as an anchor point.
The way Midoriya uses it at the start of World Heroes Mission to flee an attack of villains, we can easily make the connection with the use that Spider-Man makes of his web. So, real inspiration or just a wink? The author of the manga did not speak on the subject.
In any case, the universe built by Kōhei Horikoshi does not hide its few references to masters of the genre like DC and Marvel, of which he admits to being a fan himself. Midoriya and Peter Parker (especially that of Tom Holland) have a fairly similar background and personality. Two ordinary young men turned extraordinary under the guidance of an older mentor.
To see if Midoriya one day becomes able to stick to walls or sense danger like the famous spider-man does.
While waiting to learn more, you can find the episodes of My Hero Academia on the DNA, Crunchyroll and Netflix streaming platforms, and read the manga at Ki-Oon editions. The film World Heroes’ Mission, meanwhile, is to be discovered at the cinema, in VOSTFR or in VF.
