Lionel Messi will finish his career at Barcelona, says Bartomeu

The 33-year-old’s relationship with the club was strained this year and his future with the Catalans had been called into question with his contract next season.

Despite reports that Messi was looking for a potential outcome, Bartomeu remains confident that his man will remain in Barcelona for many more years.

“Messi said he would end his professional and football life at Barça,” he told Spanish chain Movistar.

“I’m not going to explain the details because we are focused on the competition and we negotiate with a lot of players, but Messi has explained to us that he wants to stay and so we will appreciate him even longer.”

His comments came after Barcelona defeated Villarreal 4-1 away on Sunday to keep their low hopes of a La Liga title low.

Messi was on the spot with two assists, but couldn’t add to his total of 700 career goals.

Signs of trouble

The Argentinian has seemed unstable at times this season and has repeatedly spoken out against the club.

Earlier this year, he went wild against the club’s sporting director, Eric Abidal, for accusing the players of not having worked hard enough under former manager Ernesto Valverde.
He also released a somewhat barbed statement in March announcing that the team would take a pay cut amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Messi seemed to suggest that his teammates did not need to be invited by the club hierarchy to take the deduction.

“It never ceases to surprise us that within the club there are people who want to put us in a bad light and try to pressure us to do something that we have always been clear that we would do,” reads we in the press release.

The public quarrels were all the more surprising given Messi’s usual reluctance to express himself on his social media platforms.
