Is a Tortoise for Sale the Right Pet for Me?

Like many new additions to your life, the decision to buy a turtle for sale should be a well thought out decision. Animals in general can undergo serious lifestyle changes, especially if this is your very first animal. If you see a turtle for sale and consider buying one as a pet, there are many things to consider before you go. To find out if a pet turtle is right for you, read on to find out more about its diet, temperament, habitat needs, and more!

Temperament.

Although each turtle has a different temperament, some species are known to be friendlier than others. Many are known to have personalities and will act differently depending on a number of factors. Whether it’s a sulcata, a Russian, a Burmese or one of the countless other species, you will meet a range of personalities.

There are, however, common opinions about turtles to keep. Sulcatas are known to be social and like to be touched and rubbed. Red feet can be quite playful and affectionate. They make a great companion and love to be manipulated. Russians tend to be bolder, fearless, even if they are shy at first.

Habits.

Knowing what your turtle likes to do will help you create a better habitat. Just like temperament, your turtle’s habits can vary; but you can expect common habits. They like to dig and generally prefer to cross any obstacle rather than around it.

Turtles also like to escape and hide, so make sure the enclosure is high enough that it can’t climb and that there are plenty of places for your turtle to hide. Although feeding your turtle by hand exposes you to unintentional bites, it is not one to bite voluntarily.

Pregnant.

Turtles are born from cute little animals. Over the years, however, they can grow hundreds of times their size. You can buy a turtle for sale that fits perfectly into a small tank, but you will eventually have to find a crib where it can live comfortably. As I mentioned earlier, they like to climb and escape from their paddocks. It is therefore necessary to have a robust and break-resistant cage for your turtle. Glass is not recommended because turtles prefer privacy and can become stressed with 4 glass walls that do not let it hide. If you absolutely need glass, cover 3 sides and make sure it has space to hide.

If you keep it outside, a spacious crib is perfect. An indoor turtle can do just fine in a plastic pool or a homemade cage.

Diet.

The diet of a turtle is quite simple. For the best diet, you want to provide a variety of plant-based foods, as well as protein from live foods. About 80% of your turtle’s diet should consist of fresh vegetables. Sweet potato, fresh kale, squash … all this is perfect for your turtle. Give your turtle fruit every third or fourth feed. Humans may like fruit, but a turtle’s diet should only be about 20% fruit.

Commercial foods like canned turtles and pellets are also good for your turtle, as well as different sources of protein from mealworms, crickets and other insects.

Lighting and temperature.

Turtles love it hot! You will want to make sure that you provide more than one heat source, one of which is incandescent light. This allows them to bask in the warm artificial sun and get the warmth they love. Make sure they can also have abdominal heat. A cage radiator can work well with glass terrariums but should never be used for plastic or wooden cages.
