The Duck Prescott and Dallas Cowboys have traveled wild together. The 27-year-old quarterback was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, in which he planned to develop as a backup to Tony Romeo. But when Romeo suffered a vertebral compression fracture during the preseason, Prescott was in an early role in Week 1 of his rookie season.
Prescott exceeded expectations and never left the starting job. But for years, the quarterback and the team could not reach an agreement on a new contract. The Cowboys put the franchise tag on Presscott in 2020. In five matches that season, Presscott suffered a horrific injury where he had sprained his right ankle and suffered a compound fracture.
Although the Cowboys publicly supported Prescott, it was unclear if they could come to an agreement with their quarterback. Okay, it seems like they have figured it out.
The Cowboys and Prescott agreed to a four-year, $ 160 million extension, which could cost up to $ 164 million. The deal includes a $ 126 million guarantee with a record $ 75 million due the first year, After ESPN’s Adam Sheher. The deal also includes a $ 66 million bonus, the largest in NFL history. The average season in the first three years of the deal is $ 42 million.
The contract is technically for six years, although it avoids four for salary cap reasons. Salary cap relief will be available immediately – Prescott’s salary-cap number for this season is less than $ 15.5 million if he plays again under the franchise tag.
In five seasons so far, Prescott has gone 42-27 with 17,364 passing yards, 106 touchdown passes, 40 interceptions and a 66 percent completion rate. He is under intense media scrutiny, but revealed last season how valuable he is to the team. The Cowboys’ offense sprung after Prescott’s injury, which included just one touchdown during a three-game span.
Of course, now that he has achieved a great deal, the pressure will be even greater for Prescott to succeed. The Cowboys have not reached the Super Bowl in 25 years. If Prescott can lead the team to a championship, it will be worth every penny.
