Scientists around the world are rushing to find a drug or vaccine to treat and prevent Covid-19. It is a coordinated global effort like we have never seen. Now a manufacturer of herbal products in India, co-founded by billionaire Acharya Balkrishna and famous yogi Baba Ramdev called Patanjali Ayurved, claims that they have developed an herbal remedy for Covid-19 that can cure completely those affected by respiratory disease ravages. They launched the Corona kit, which contains an Ayurvedic pill called Coronil, nasal drops and vegetable oil. We are all saved! Normal life can start again! Except … not so quickly, the Corona kit from Balkrishna and Ramdev has already been criticized both by the medical community in India and by the government of the country.
Patanjali Ayurved sells natural supplements, soap, skin products and instant noodles. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev is the face of business. The two have made Patanjali Ayurved a booming business with $ 1.6 billion in annual revenue. Patanjali Ayurved presents itself as entirely natural, locally grown and healthy. Ramdev became famous for his appearances on Indian television. His fame has made Patanjali Ayurved a household name. Balkrishna owns most of the shares. Ramdev has a very small farm, because he lives according to the motto of the life of “sanyasi”, a life without material goods.
Balakrishna and Ramdev held a press conference to announce the Corona kit. Currently, India has the fourth-largest number of people in the world who have tested positive for coronavirus. India has a ministry of Ayush, a government department that promotes alternative medicine such as Ayurveda, homeopathy and yoga. The department released a statement questioning the facts of the allegation that Corona Kit cured Covid-19 and ordered the company to stop advertising to its new audience or to publicize its unproven allegations effectiveness until the department has an opportunity to investigate. The ministry wants to know if Patanjali has conducted a research study, clinical trials and the sample size of patients treated with the Corona kit.
Balakrishna and Ramdev claim to have had 120 asymptomatic, mildly symptomatic and moderately symptomatic in the study. Half received the Coronil pill. The other half received a placebo. They tested patients the third, seventh and 14e days. They claim that symptomatic patients became asymptomatic at the end of the study. The Coronil pill is made from extracts of Indian ginseng, giloy and sacred basil. The launch of Coronil comes at a time when the Indian government is exploring the use of natural medicines to treat coronavirus. The Ayush ministry is conducting a study of three different formulations for the potential treatment of Covid-19 patients. However, the ministry is quick to point out that their drugs under development are not antiviral. They are designed to support the immune and / or respiratory system.
