How to Keep Your Rental Carpet Looking New
If you are lucky enough to have carpeting in your college apartment or dorm room, you’ll want to make sure you keep it nice so that you get your damage deposit money back. How can you do that? It’s actually really easy. Just follow the steps below:
- Have visitors remove their shoes
You don’t have to be neurotic about shoe removal. Just put a basket near the door and put your own shoes in it when you enter your room or apartment. The simple act of removing your shoes will allow the dirt and debris to not enter your space. The majority of the dirt comes in on shoes. No shoes means no dirt.
- Put welcome mats outside the door and washable mats inside
This removes debris from shoes as they come to your door and come inside your apartment. Look for mats for inside that can be thrown into the washing machine. That makes cleaning up so much easier. You don’t have to choose ones that are simply utilitarian. There are so many designs and options available.
- Rotate your furniture
The wooden feet on couches, chairs and tables leave deep marks in the carpeting. That can translate to permanent marks if the furniture stays there for too long. You don’t have to make huge changes; moving your furniture even just a few inches one way or another will make a huge difference to the carpet’s life.
- Vacuum the right way
Use the vacuum attachment to clean around the room’s edges, under the furniture and in other hard-to-reach spots. If you skip this step, you may end up having a huge dark line around your room and under the furniture.
Vacuum the main portion of the floor with a beater brush attachment. This allows the carpet fibers to be moved so that the dirt can be sucked out from the bottom of the carpeting. Vacuum in one direction first, and then in the opposite direction. You’ll end up vacuuming the floor several times. This is important because you can’t get every little bit with one pass.
- Professionally clean the carpet
Whether you opt to rent a machine and clean the carpet or you choose to have someone else clean it for you, a professional cleaning will make all the difference in the world. Just make sure the cleaning medium is washed completely out, and that as much water as possible is removed.
