Hariyali Teej 2020: The festival of Teej is celebrated in remembrance of the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Like Karva Chauth, Teej is one of the most loved festivals in India. Hariyali Teej falls on Shukla Paksha Tritiya in Shravana month and usually falls two days before Nag Panchami.

Hariyali Teej festival is mainly celebrated by married women in honour of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. On this day, married women observe a fast to seek the long life and wellness of their husbands. At the same time, unmarried women observe a fast to get a husband like Lord Shiva.

Hariyali Teej is also known as Chhoti Teej and Shravana Teej.

Teej festivity is celebrated in the northern states of India — especially in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Why is Hariyali Teej is celebrated?

As per Hindu mythology, Hariyali Teej festival is a special day for Hindus, on this day, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati was abducted by her friends to stop her marriage with Lord Vishnu.

Parvati’s friends knew that she secretly loved Lord Shiva and yearned to marry him. So her friend kidnapped and hid her in the forest. Parvati used this time to pray Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was so moved by the prayers that he agreed and they were married with the blessings of her father.

Hariyali Teej has great significance. According to drikpanchang, this year Hariyali Teej will be celebrated on Thursday, July 23, 2020.

Devotes observe fast and do a special puja (prayer) to worship the moon with milk, flowers, and curd.

How is Hariyali Teej is celebrated?

On this auspicious day married women wear new clothes preferably green sari, green bangles, prepare swings and use it while singing Teej songs.

Parvathi Maa is known as Teej Mata. There are three famous Teej’s which are celebrated in the holy month of Shravan and Bhadrapada, which include the following:

  • Hariyali Teej (July 23, 2020)
  • Kajari Teej (August 6, 2020)
  • Hartalika Teej (August 21, 2020)

Kajari Teej which comes fifteen days after Hariyali Teej is known as Badi Teej.
