Green Living – Green Home Design and Environmentally Friendly Habits

Why live in green?

I have 8 grandchildren and I would like them to live in the future in a world as good or better than the world we know today. But this will only be possible if we take more care of our use of natural resources and the environment. I think I have to take responsibility for what I can, related to my daily life, and I would recommend that you do the same if you care about your grandchildren.

Is it difficult to live greener?

Many feel that living greener is very inconvenient, expensive and difficult. But follow these tips and see if they match your temperament and possibilities. As with many things in life, it helps to think and plan ahead of what you want to do. For me, the following approach to greener everyday life has been rewarding.

Generate greener living ideas

Use five minutes to list a lot of things that you think would reduce your and your family’s impact on the environment. Just highlight ideas as they come to mind. If possible, do it as a family event around the table and engage everyone in this green brainstorming. Think of three types of greener life as follows and categorize your green ideas into the three categories:

1. Green ideas that will save you money

2. Green ideas that will be neutral on your economy

3. Green ideas that will cost you money

1. Green ideas that will save you money

Ideas for greener living that will save you money need to be implemented immediately. It is stupid to waste money and at the same time pollute more or use more resources than necessary. Many companies here in Denmark have made use of it to reduce their environmental impact and to improve their competitiveness and benefit from this green initiative at the same time. Many private households would also benefit.

Here are examples of green ideas that will save you more or less money the moment you implement them:

– Avoid running the toilet and running taps (also remember the garden).

– Run your lights and electricity more than necessary, for example in rooms without people, and emergency lights in electrical equipment.

– Drive your care more smoothly and you reduce fuel consumption and keep your tires longer.

2. Green ideas that will be neutral on your economy

If you think of your grandchildren as I recommend, green ideas that will be neutral for your economy should also be considered. These are ideas for greener living that just need a little bit of attention from you in your daily life.

Such greener habits could be

– When shopping, avoid extra bags and store packaging if you don’t need them.

– Make your own compost in your garden and keep as many nutrients in your garden instead of “ exporting ” garden waste and having to buy fertilizer etc.

– Reduce your consumption of red meat and prepare foods with more fish, chicken and turkey and supplement more with vegetables. – It will also be healthier.

3. Green ideas that will cost you money

Greener living ideas that cost you money might also be worth considering, so keep reading. Here I will highlight the environmental effect when you buy new types of equipment, like new freezer, new car, new computer, new washing machine, etc.

Take your time to investigate the different qualities related to the environmental impact of different makes and models of machinery and equipment. Search for an independent assessment of environmental impacts. In Europe, we have a mark from A to E for energy consumption and the most environmentally friendly washing machines etc. will have an A label. Most consumers, at least in Denmark, will be very aware of the existence of this label and will choose it if it is not too expensive.

The beauty of such an expense is that in most cases it will pay off in the long run to pay the extra for an eco-friendly model because you will save electricity or other things in the long run. . In many cases, the premium environmentally friendly machines will also be of the best quality and that will help you too. So you see it’s not that hard to start with some new greener habits and you can still look your grandchildren in the eye because you care about their future.
