If you travel back in time in seven short months, there were only two people on the planet with a net worth of $ 200 billion. Those two people were Bill Gates – with a net worth of $ 120 billion – and Jeff Bezos – who had a net worth of $ 190 billion. If you traveled back in a few years, in less than a decade, no human had controlled more than $ 100 billion in non-inflation-adjusted wealth.
In August 2020, two newcomers joined the “Centabillionaires” club.
On August 7, Mark Zuckerberg joined the club for the first time.
On August 26, Elon Musk joined for the first time. Four months later, Elon had total assets of $ 200 billion, topping Jeff Bezos as the world’s richest man for the first time.
Today there are eight centibiliers that run on planet Earth. There is no time in history that there are many humans with personal fortune in the north of 100 billion dollars.
In addition to Mark, Elon, Jeff and Bill, the Centabillionaires club Warren Buffett and Bernard Arnault are counted. Both have been out of membership in the last two years, but Warren is technically entitled to a permanent membership as she has already given more than $ 40 billion in donations in her life.
Two new entrants, rounding out the eight members, achieved their status for the first time on Friday. Those two new members are Larry Page and Sergey Brin, co-founders of a small company called Google.
As of this writing, Larry Page has total assets of $ 104 billion. That is enough to make him the sixth richest man in the world, above Warren Buffett.
As of this writing, Sergey Brin has total assets of $ 100 billion. He is the eighth richest man in the world, one place below Warren Buffett.
Why is Larry Page a little richer than Sergey Brin?
According to the latest SEC filing by Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Larry owns 6% of the company vs. Sergey’s 5%.
Since 2004 both founders have sold billions worth of Google shares. Larry has sold around $ 9 billion vs. Sergey $ 8 billion.
Google went public in 2004 for $ 85 a share. The stock closed at a high of $ 2,285 on Friday.
