Hello everybody! Monica Chavez here with a super simple furniture repair project.
I have a collection of vintage and antique sewing machines with tables that accumulate in my pile of furniture. It was time we brought one to refresh us.
We have decided to breathe new life into a tall and narrow sewing table Varathane Premium interior wood stain from the Home Depot.
This sewing table in particular was found in a real estate sale for 5 USD! FIVE DOLLARS.
This piece needed a lot of attention because it was very popular in its heyday. I also wanted to take the opportunity to make it more my style. Varathane Premium Fast Dry Interior wood stain made of ebony would be exactly what i needed to get it there.
Deliveries
We collected our supplies, including the Varathane wood stain, Water-based polyathethane in varathan in clear satin, Orbital sander and Grinding wheels of different grains, a Foam brush, lint-free clothing, Drop cloth, and drill disassemble the sewing table.
Preparation for stains
We removed the top table parts and hinges to properly grind / stain the parts.
In order to prepare the surface for the new stain, the weathered old stain layer had to be removed with one Orbital sander.
With different grains of Grinding wheels One after the other from coarse to super fine, we get a clean and smooth finish on the wood.
We always sand in the direction of the wood grain.
Every part of the sewing table was treated equally to remove the old stain.
After sanding down all the parts, we vacuumed up the dust and wiped everything off a lint-free cloth.
Apply Varathane Premium Interior Wood Stain
After stirring the stain we used one thoroughly Foam brush to distribute it generously on all polished parts of the sewing table.
We have allowed that stain Soak in for 2-3 minutes and wipe with a lint-free cloth to remove the excess stain.
Reporting on the Varathane Premium is so good that only one shift is required. This Ebony Spot color is exactly what I was hoping for!
The longer you let the stain sit before wiping, the darker the color. I mean, just look at this beautiful wood grain.
Use of Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane
We let the wood stain dry for 1 hour before we grab it Water-based top coat. The Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane wanted to give us the protective finish that a side table needs. Let the beautiful at the same time Ebony wood stain shine through the crystal clear layer.
With a clean one Foam brush We applied the stirred polyurethane along the direction of the wood grain in a smooth, even layer.
This layer felt dry in 2 hours and gave us an abrasion and scratch resistant surface. After 48 hours the pieces were cured and ready to be reassembled.
