French Manicure, the definitive guide

Revisited, reinterpreted, decorated: the French manicure always like, like a lot. To find out more, we interviewed Antonio Sacripante, Director of Education for pArish and nail stylist protagonist of the fashion weeks.

Why is it called French Manicure and who proposed it for the first time? “There are those who attribute the authorship of this nail design to Chanel, dating back to the 1930s; instead, there are those who claim that the “French” attribute is solely a marketing strategy, which recalls the typical French elegance and refinement. The boom of this technique, however, was among the 70s and 80s when the American Jeff Pink, using acrylic, he created the manicure with the tips painted in white. Since then, the trend has never experienced a crisis ».

Although the original version is still very current, several variants have emerged over time … “The version “au reverse“consists in the decoration of the cuticular part instead of the distal edge of the nail **, ** that”sideway“expects the reason to be on the side of the nail instead. The so-called”Crescent moon“instead highlights the lunula (base of the nail), while the variant”stripes“sees the overlap of several color strips. The”baby boomers“, a variant of the latest additions, sees the fading of nude and white colors, gradually on the nail, rather than providing for the sharp detachment of color between the two shades”.

What is the perfect shape of the nail to obtain an optimal result? “There is no general rule for everyone, it mainly depends on the natural shape of the nail. If the lunula is wide, the short square shape is the most suitable; the more oval the lunula, the more natural the shape of the nail will be and therefore the almond French, which is nowadays more trendy. In general, if the nail plate (surface) is short, La French is not indicated, because white tends to touch the hand. The “baby boom” version, for example, helps to overcome this limit: going to fade the white color towards the cuticles in an ever more tenuous way, the sinuosity of the nail is accentuated. Another trick in this sense is to opt for theeyeliner manicure, where a thin black or colored thread is laid on the top of the nail “.

What are the best combinations for the colored versions? “Need reason with color matching, therefore combining two nuances that are very easy to combine or, on the contrary, extremely contrasting, such as red and black. An example of “au reverse” with ton sur ton colors is the one proposed by Roberto Cavalli in the Spring / Summer 2018 collection: pink gold and nude create an extremely regular harmony on the nail. In general, the trend is to combine creamy colors, with the exception of those who love to experiment with particularly defined nuances ».

How to best use applications and glitter? «For the seal to increase, we close the job with a top coat or nail glue. Surely the decoration applications are more current than glitter, unless it is an 80s look “.

Fantasy and pattern versions go crazy on social media. What are the most trendy themes? “For day by day, less articulated versions are indicated, easy to wear and maintain, such as the” baby boom “which helps to hide the regrowth of the nail. In the decorated versions, the concept of french twist it is among the most used: the French area is decorated. In the wedding, for example, I find original the revival of a detail of the dress in the French area ».

And finally here are the basic indications (but inline you will find many tutorials) to make the most popular French manicure versions at home. CLASSIC FRENCH MANICURE 1.
