Fitbit is still the rule of fitness trackers, and for good reason. The Fitbit Inspire HR may have been an entry-level portable fitness tracker a few years ago now, but it hasn’t lost any of the flair that made it such a good choice in 2019. Its sleek and sleek presentation and its no-frills approach to tracking meant Fitbit could lower the price, but without compromising any of the features you actually needed.
An old dog might not be able to learn new tricks, but this device still has many features to explore. Here are some of our favorite Fitbit Inspire HR tips and tricks to help you use your activity tracker to its full potential.
Setting up the Fitbit Inspire HR
After unpacking your Inspire HR activity tracker, the first thing to do is to set up your device by adding it to your account and connecting it to your mobile device. First, download and install the Fitbit app from the iOS App Store or the Google Play Store. Next, open the Fitbit app and tap Join Fitbit to create a new account or choose to connect to an existing account if you already have one. Follow the onscreen instructions to create a Fitbit account or enter your current account credentials.
After signing in to your account, you must add the Inspire HR to your Fitbit account by tapping the Account top right icon. Tap Configure a device and select the Inspire HR from the list of available trackers. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your new tracker and pair it with your mobile device.
Sync the Fitbit Inspire HR
Fitbit devices usually sync automatically throughout the day, but you can turn this feature on or off in the device settings. Open the Fitbit app, tap the Inspire HR device icon at the top left. Use the toggle to enable or disable the Synchronization all day functionality.
If you turn off the all day sync feature, you should always sync at least once a day to keep your stats up to date. Just open the Fitbit app, and the Inspire HR will sync when it’s nearby. You can also sync manually by tapping the Inspire HR device icon in the top left, then scrolling down Sync now option at the bottom.
How to use sleep tracking
The ability to track your sleep is a great bonus with every Fitbit accessory these days, and the Inspire HR is no exception. Tracking your sleep is valuable because it can tell you how restful your sleep has been and how long you’ve slept. Getting adequate sleep is important when recovering from exercise. You don’t have to do anything to turn on sleep tracking on your Inspire HR – just wear it to bed and it will start tracking automatically when it detects that you’ve fallen asleep.
How to use Screen Wake
Screen Wake allows you to turn on the watch screen when you raise your wrist. Simply press and hold the Inspire HR side button to open the quick settings screen. Swipe up or down to find Screen wake-up setting (bulb icon) and press Screen wake-up to toggle between off (press the button) and on (raise wrist).
Using Quick Settings
Press and hold the button on your tracker to access the quick settings screen. Here you can check the battery level, turn the screen wake-up on or off, and toggle notifications. The icons are bright when the function is on and dark to indicate that the option is off.
How to go back in the tracker menus
The Inspire HR has only one button and serves as a back button. When you’ve made your way into settings or an app, click the side button a few times and you’ll be back in the comfort of the clock face.
How to turn on / off automatic exercise tracking
Automatic exercise tracking detects when you start an exercise and will start tracking it without your intervention. Some people like the simplicity of this automatic tracking, while others prefer not to use it. To turn it off, open the Fitbit app and go to the app dashboard. Press the Exercise tile and then the gear icon to display a list of activities that support auto-tracking. Tap on each exercise and turn off the automatic recognition setting as desired.
How to start / pause / stop an exercise
To start a workout, you must drag the clock face down to the Workout screen. Tap Exercises then scroll up or down to select the desired activity. Press the Start button when you are ready to begin.
Once you are exercising, you can click the side button to pause the activity. It will remain on hold until you press the start button on the Inspire HR screen. When you are finished exercising, simply click the side button a second time to complete the activity.
How to add new exercises to your tracker
Inspire HR includes six default exercises that you can modify to suit your needs. Open the mobile app, tap the Inspire HR icon in the upper left corner and scroll to Exercise shortcuts. In this section you can add new exercises, delete exercises and rearrange them. You can also configure each activity in this section choosing whether you want to use hints that tell you when you are approaching your goal.
How to set exercise and health goals
Fitbit lets you set specific daily goals for health and fitness metrics such as activity, exercise, nutrition, and sleep. You can customize these values in the mobile app by tapping the account icon in the upper right corner and scrolling to Goals section. Select the goal you want to configure and update the details. The next time you sync, this new information will be sent to your device.
View your daily stats
Swipe up from the dial to the top of the Inspire HR to view your health and fitness stats. If you set a goal in the Fitbit app, each statistic displays a ring indicating your progress toward that goal. You can slide your finger up to scroll through the following:
- Calories burned
- Active minutes
- Distance traveled
- Objective of the exercise
- To sleep
- Cycle path
- The water
How to download a clock face
To download a new clock face, you need to open the Fitbit app on your mobile device and tap the device icon at the top left of the screen. Press the Clock faces tile to see all available faces. Have you found a clock face that catches your eye? Tap to install and sync your watch to make the change. If you press the applications , you can view the apps that you have already installed on the Inspire HR, but you cannot download new ones to your tracker.
How to check your battery life
The Inspire HR’s default clock face does not contain a battery meter. To check your battery, press and hold the side button to access the quick setting screen where you will see the battery gauge.
How to configure notifications
You can receive text messages, calls, and even view app notifications on your Inspire HR. To control which alerts you can see on your tracker, go to the mobile app and tap the Inspire HR device icon at the top left. Press on Notifications and use the buttons to turn notifications on or off for calls, text messages, and calendar events. To change mobile app notifications, select App notifications and choose which notifications should go to your tracker. You can also turn off all notifications using the Quick settings menu that you can access by pressing and holding the side button.
How to reset the Inspire HR to factory defaults
If you return your Inspire HR activity tracker or sell it to someone else, you must perform a factory reset to erase the data on the device. On Inspire HR, open the Settings app by swiping down from the clock face. Tap Settings then Clear user data. Follow the instructions to remove all of your information from the activity tracker.
How to restart the Inspire HR
Knowing how to restart the Inspire HR can be a lifeline when something goes wrong and the tracker freezes. You start by connecting the Inspire HR to the charging cable. Press and hold the button on your tracker for five seconds, then release the button. Once you see a smiley face and the Inspire HR vibrates, the tracker has restarted.
