3 Edgar Allan Poe horror movies to watch after Netflix’s Fal…

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the scariest, darkest writers in history, and in some ways, he invented what we now know as the horror genre. However, despite his immense influence, there have been fewer Poe adaptations than you might think.

With the arrival of Mike Flanagan Fall of the House of Usher On Netflix, we’re getting the most brilliant adaptation of Poe’s work to date. Still, this new series isn’t the first time Poe has been adapted. Here are the three best films based on the horror writer’s great work.

The Mask of the Red Death (1964)

A story about plague and class warfare that is one of Poe’s most famous works, the Masque of the Red Death It follows a wealthy medieval Italian prince living the high life within the walls of his castle, even as the peasants around him are ravaged by plague.

Needless to say, things don’t go well for our soon-to-be-haunted prince. Directed by B-movie legend Roger Corman and starring Vincent Price, the Masque of the Red Death It’s exactly the kind of terrifying scene every great Poe adaptation should be, despite its relatively small budget.

Stonehearst Asylum (2014)

based on short story Doctor Tarr and Professor Feather’s system, Stonehearst Asylum It tells the story of a new employee at a mental asylum who falls in love with a co-worker and then discovers that there was recently a very disturbing change in staffing at the facility.

It stars Kate Beckinsale, Ben Kingsley, Jim Sturgess and David Thewlis. Stonehearst Asylum There is a sharp, intense joy from beginning to end. There’s a reason Poe’s stories of darkness and destruction endure, and Stonehearst Asylum It manages to capture all that darkness as it tells its own complicated story.

The Black Cat (1934)

Starring two of the most famous men in the history of horror, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, Black Cat One of the most effective Poe adaptations. Although you might think that the movie isn’t scary anymore because it’s almost 100 years old, that’s far from the truth.

It is the story of a young couple who gets caught up in the rivalry between a mysterious doctor and a famous architect. Black Cat is a potboiler who knows how to keep the audience in tension. It’s just as strange and dark as the story it’s based on, and actually feels just as dangerous as some modern horror movies.
