Ed Helms Defends A Problematic Statue

Peacock drops the trailer for Rutherford Falls, its newest series following a New England townie who defends a problematic stature of his ancestor.

Peacock releases the trailer for its newest original series, Rutherford Falls, made by The Good Place creator, Mike Schur, and featuring Ed Helms, Jana Schmieding, and Michael Greyeyes. After The Good Place aired its finale in January 2020, Schur almost immediately started creating his latest series. This is not surprising considering Schur’s constant work across multiple shows, such as The OfficeParks and RecreationBrooklyn Nine-Nine, and Master of None. After spending much of his early career working on office sitcoms, Schur has made it his mission to create fresh content. The Good Place managed that by turning a network TV show into a deep meditation on moral philosophy and the afterlife.

Now, it seems that Schur is shaking up Hollywood again, this time by giving a voice to those who have long been underrepresented in media: America’s indigenous community. Rutherford Falls will follow Nathan Rutherford (Helms) who wants to preserve a statue of the town’s colonialist settler who also happens to be his ancestor. Not only does the historic relic create a safety hazard on the road, it also represents a contentious part of the town’s history. The trailer teases that the show will be “a story about stories,” which alludes to a running theme that discusses our family histories and what it means to honor some while erasing others. It appears that Rutherford Falls will tackle head-on the contentious political debate about preserving colonial statues, which represent an era of mass genocide for the Indigenous community. In order to do this properly, Schur gave the role of executive producer and showrunner to Sierra Teller Ornelas, a Navajo writer who worked on Superstore and Happy Endings. Schur also made sure to staff his writers room and cast with Native Americans, further allowing actual Indigenous people to take the reins and tell their story.

Rutherford Falls‘ synopsis reads: “A comedy about two lifelong best friends, Nathan Rutherford (Ed Helms) and Reagan Wells (Jana Schmieding), who find themselves at a crossroads – quite literally – when their sleepy town gets an unexpected wakeup call. From co-creators and executive producers, Michael Schur (Parks and Recreation, The Good Place), Ed Helms, and Sierra Teller Ornelas (Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Superstore).” Rutherford Falls will premiere on Peacock on April 22.
