When she was teased during the post-credit scene of Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel promised to be one of the most powerful heroes in the MCU. Her first solo movie explored her backstory as a Kree warrior who travels to Earth to uncover her mysterious past.
Along with the sci-fi action and excitement, Captain Marvel is also filled with memorable lines. Looking at the first and last lines from the main characters in the movie reveals subtle hints to their character development, themes of the film, and plot twists. From Nick Fury to Monica Rambeau to Carol Danvers herself, the characters’ first and last lines are fascinating to revisit.
“The Accusors have completed their operation but the greater mission was a failure thanks to your team.” – “The woman.”
Prior to serving as the main villain in Guardians of the Galaxy, Ronan appears as a Kree officer who blames Yon-Rogg and the Starforce team for a failed mission. After Carol destroys his fleet, Ronan promises to come back for the real weapon — Carol herself.
The first line reintroduces Ronan into the MCU and hints that the Kree might not be the good guys Carol believes them to be. His final line speaks to how powerful Carol has become, which might make her a target of the Kree in future movies.
“Goose likes you. She doesn’t typically take to people.” – “I’ve got to blow this engine before they find it.”
The Kree hero Mar-Vell first appears in Carol’s memories in disguise as human Wendy Lawson as she comments on how the cat Goose takes to Carol. After Mar-Vell and Carol are attacked by the Kree, Mar-Vell tries to destroy the engine she created but is killed by Yon-Rogg.
The first line is a nice little hint about the true nature of the cat Goose and why it isn’t always so friendly. Her final line cements Mar-Vell as a hero who dies trying to do the right thing and ends up inspiring Carol.
8 Phil Coulson
“You call this in?” – “Get some rest, sir. You got a big decision to make.”
Phil Coulson is introduced as a rookie S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in the 1990s, investigating Carol’s arrival on Earth and questioning a witness. At the end of the movie, he discusses Fury’s plans to begin building the Avengers Initiative.
The first line does nothing more than remind fans that Coulson is a focused and professional agent when on the job. His final line shows that he and Fury have formed a bond at this point, which begins their partnership that will last for years to come.
7 Monica Rambeau
“Aunty Carol?” – “We got the ketchup stain off.”
Before appearing as an adult in WandaVision, Monica Rambeau is introduced as a child who excitedly greets Carol after she had vanished years earlier. As Carol prepares to leave Earth again, Monica returns her pilot’s jacket that she cleaned for her.
As Monica greets Carol as “Aunty Carol” it shows Carol she has a life filled with loved ones she didn’t know existed. The final line shows that Monica admires and looks up to Carol, which could make their relationship interesting when they reunite in Captain Marvel 2.
6 Supreme Intelligence
“Vers.” -” On Hala, you were reborn. Vers.”
As Carol visits the Supreme Intelligence, the artificial intelligence that rules the Kree Empire, it takes the form of Mar-Vell and greets Carol as “Vers”, her Kree name. After being trapped by the Supreme Intelligence, it taunts Carol that she was nothing before the Kree took her in and once again calls her “Vers.”
Both of these lines show Carol’s journey and coming to terms with the truth of her existence. While Vers was the only name she knew at the start of the movie, by the end she knows it is a lie and fights back against it.
“How about I tell you my secret when you tell me yours?” – “I love sporting his beautiful blue eyes.”
While on a mission to stop the shapeshifting Skrull, Carol is trapped by their leader Talos who teases that she holds some secret that he is after. By the end of the movie, Talos is revealed as a good guy and jokes about resuming his disguise as Fury’s boss.
With his first line, Talos appears to be the menacing villain but it also teases that he has some secrets of his own. The final line could simply be a funny in-joke about actor Ben Mendelsohn, who played Talos and Fury’s boss, complimenting his own alluring blue eyes.
4 Maria Rambeau
“Where’s your head at?” – “Go on.”
Maria Rambeau, Monica’s mother, is introduced in one of Carol’s memories as the two get ready to fly their jets. As she and Carol say goodbye again, Maria encourages Carol to go.
Within the brief memory, Maria is established as a good friend to Carol as well as someone who grounds her. This becomes important in Carol’s own self-discovery. In the end, she continues to be supportive as she loses her friend again but knows she is needed elsewhere.
“Do you know what time it is?” – “You can’t do this.”
Carol’s Kree mentor Yon-Rogg is introduced as Carol wakes him up in the middle of the night when she can’t sleep. After he’s revealed to be a villain, Carol defeats Yon-Rogg and sends him back to the Kree with a warning as he also warns her.
Yon-Rogg is introduced as someone who is there for Carol whenever she needs him, which makes his betrayal all the more impactful. In the end, he is still trying to control Carol and limit her, but she is no longer listening.
2 Nick Fury
“Excuse me miss, do you know anything about a lady who went through the roof of that Blockbuster over there?” – “We found her and we weren’t even looking.”
After Carol crashlands on Earth, Nick Fury arrives at the scene and immediately sees that Carol is not from around here. After Carol left, Coulson asks Fury if he thinks they’ll find others like her and Fury remarks that they weren’t even looking for her.
The first line shows that Fury is a calm and collected operative, even if he is investigating a possible alien arrival on Earth. His final line teases at how Carol inspired him to seek out other exceptional beings for the Avengers Initiative.
1 Carol Danvers
“Can’t sleep.” – “It’s hard for me to say goodbye, too.”
After dreaming of her memories on Earth, Carol visits Yon-Rogg when she can’t sleep. After rediscovering her life on Earth, Carol is forced to say goodbye to Maria and head out on her next adventure in space.
With her first line, Carol is established as a hero who is struggling with some inner turmoil despite her power. The final line is a bittersweet one as Carol has found her purpose as a hero but must leave the only loved ones she has. It sets up some fascinating developments for the future.
