Director Sam Raimi thinks the memes about his Spider-Man movies are hilarious and is pleased with what they mean for how fans respond to the trilogy. In 2002, Raimi helped redefine what a superhero movie was with the release of Spider-Man. Starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, Spider-Man told the now well-known origin story of the young hero while striking a solid balance between grounded realism and comic book fantasies. Raimi’s follow-up, Spider-Man 2, is still regarded as one of the best superhero movies of all time by many, and though 2007’s Spider-Man 3 stumbled far more in the eyes of fans, the entire trilogy remains a vital part of the comic book genre’s history.

After spending some time away from the world of webslingers and supervillains, Raimi is stepping back into the Marvel realm with next year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Fans were thrilled to hear he would be directing the project following the departure of Scott Derrickson, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen have praised his skills. Raimi’s return to Marvel has led some to wonder if connections could be drawn between his new film and Spider-Man, though so far it remains to be seen if that will happen.
Nevertheless, Raimi has not forgotten his Spider-Man trilogy. During a Reddit Q&A session for his film The Unholy (for which he served as producer), he was asked to share his thoughts on the Spider-Man films remaining internet mainstays. “Those memes are hysterically funny,” Raimi replied. “And it’s so cool to see that many people liked the films.” He also described what it’s like to work with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, calling him “a great producer.” He added, “He knows his characters and story better than anybody. And that’s really a great producer’s super power.”
As with any beloved movie these days, Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy has produced its fair share of memes over the years. Who can forget Emo Peter Parker from Spider-Man 3, and his awkward dancing? That could perhaps be the most memorable of the memes, though there are more. As Raimi pointed out, though, the presence of the jokes means the movies have resonated with audiences, and that’s really special. Comic book movies have come a long way since the first Spider-Man trilogy, yet those films remain just as beloved as the ones produced today.
It will be quite interesting to see what Raimi does with Doctor Strange 2. Thanks to his experiences working on Spider-Man and Evil Dead (as Doctor Strange 2 will have some horror influences), he seems like the perfect man for the job. Raimi’s Marvel return just shows how long-lasting his Spider-Man movies are, as he’s still regarded as a go-to director for superhero flicks. Perhaps next year, there will be even more memes of Raimi’s work for him to enjoy.
