On Wednesday January 19, Gaspard Ulliel was killed in a tragic skiing accident. The 37-year-old actor collided with another skier on a slope in the resort of La Rosière in Savoie. He died a few hours later at the Grenoble University Hospital.

The actor leaves behind a fruitful and remarkable career, punctuated by his roles in Saint Laurent by Bertand Bonello and Just the end of the world by Xavier Dolan. He had also been awarded the César for best actor in 2017 for his poignant performance in this feature film.

Recently, we could see him at the cinema in Sibyl, a moving drama in which he gave the reply to Virginie Efira and Adèle Exarchopoulos. The film was released in May 2019. He then left for the small window to shoot in the Marvel series Moon Knight and the Canal + TV movie La Vengeance au triple gallop.

A LAST ROLE IN CINEMA

On the 7th art side, Gaspard Ulliel shot his last feature film between April and June 2021. It is More than ever, a drama directed by German director Emily Atef. The story follows Hélène, a 33-year-old girl from Bordeaux played by Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Old).

The young woman lives happily as a couple. Her life changes when she learns that she has a rare lung disease. Thanks to a blog, she discovers Norway and decides to follow her instinct. She will cross all of Europe until there, in search of a new path.

More than ever, which does not yet have a release date, will therefore be Gaspard Ulliel’s final cinema project. We will therefore see him one last time on the big screen later this year or in early 2023.

AN UNFINISHED PROJECT

The native of Boulogne-Billancourt was also to find Bertand Bonello after their collaboration on Saint Laurent. He was announced at the casting of The Beast, a SF feature film where he was supposed to form a duet with Léa Seydoux.

The story will take place in the near future where emotions have become a threat. The heroine, Gabrielle, finally decides to purify her DNA in a machine that will plunge her into her past lives and rid her of all strong feelings. She then meets Louis and feels a powerful connection, as if she had known him forever. A melodrama crossed by the genre, which unfolds over three distinct periods, 1910, 2014 and 2044.

Met during the Gérardmer Festival, where he was President of the Jury in February 2021, Bertrand Bonello spoke about this project. If the starting postulate is reminiscent of the current situation, the director specifies that he had started writing his film well before the Covid pandemic.

“I started writing The Beast after Nocturama in 2017. It’s a project that took many forms before arriving at this one. It turns out that in many places, this film becomes more and more more contemporary and that’s not good news.

It is a film which is between the anticipation and the slasher but which is above all a melodrama. It takes place over 3 periods during which the characters meet. It’s a film tinged with anticipation, a bit of fantasy, disaster and a bit of horror”, he specified.

Unfortunately, the director will have to replace Gaspard Ulliel for this promising project, which announced a great reunion between the actor and the filmmaker.
