Homemade Fly Trap: Every summer it seems like your garden (or worse your house) is infested with irritating flies, no matter how hard you try. These winged creatures are called pests for a reason: they eat leftovers, crawl on garden furniture, and buzz around. Day. Long. While flies are the recommended first course of action, sometimes it is too little, too late. If everything else fails, put them on and kill them with a fly trap. While there are options bought in-store that can get the job done, sometimes the easiest way is to take the more natural approach by making a homemade flytrap with common household items.
As soon as you see them or hear them better, hear them, make some of these fly traps and spread them around your house and yard. This way you increase your chances of getting rid of as many flies as possible.
Luring fly into a trap is the hardest part. Fortunately, they are attracted to something sweet – simple syrup, honey, and fruit – so you don’t have to look too far to find something sugary that seduces you. The Country Chic Cottage uses honey as bait in the flytrap shown above, but old fruit (e.g. apple pieces), syrup and simple syrup also work. Add a dash of vinegar to keep the bees out of the trap. The goal: flies smell the bait and fly into the bottle to get there. Once inside, they can no longer fly through the narrow opening and eventually capture and kill them.
Follow this simple step-by-step guide to make your own fly trap:
- Cut off a water or soda bottle and make the bottom half a little higher than the top half. Remove the bottle cap.
- Fill the bottom with water. Add a dash of vinegar to repel the bees. The Country Chic Cottage also recommends adding a few drops of detergent to the water, as this will break the surface tension of the liquid and make it easier for the flies to sink in and drown.
- Glue the top half upside down into the bottom so that it looks like a funnel. Spread honey, syrup or sugar water around the bottleneck or fill it with decomposing fruit.
- To hang your trap, punch two holes in the top of the bottle. Then run a piece of wire or stable cord through the holes, attach the ends and hang it up wherever you want.
- As long as the problem persists, empty dead flies and add fresh bait regularly.
The best thing is that this trap also attracts and kills wasps. Most wasps are also attracted to sweets, so honey, syrup, and sugar water work for them. But as a last resort, you can always swap sweet baits for rotting meat or animal droppings (rabbit pellets or chicken litter) to complete the job.
