Baseball commissioner warns he might end season if coronavirus isn’t managed better, ESPN reports

On Friday, the league and the MLB Players Association announced that 29 players and squad staff tested positive for Covid-19 this week.

CNN has contacted the league for comment but has not received a response. A union spokesperson told CNN the union had no comment.

Two St. Louis Cardinals players have tested positive for Covid-19, the team said on Friday, forcing the MLB to postpone Friday’s game between the Cardinals and host Milwaukee Brewers.
This is the latest of several coronavirus-related postponements that have hit the MLB schedule since it began a shortened 60-game season on July 23.

The Cardinals said testing was conducted Wednesday before the team’s 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis that night. St. Louis learned of the positive results Thursday night, the team said.

The Cardinals, who left Thursday, are isolating themselves in their hotel rooms in Milwaukee “until further notice,” the team said on Friday. He has not publicly identified which players tested positive.

“The team is currently conducting rapid tests on the entire group of travelers, has implemented contact tracing and will continue to self-isolate,” the Cardinals said in a press release.

The Twins, after playing in St. Louis on Wednesday, played host to the Cleveland Indians on Thursday and are expected to play the second in a four-game series with them on Friday. No change to this schedule was immediately announced.

For now, Friday’s Cardinals-Brewers game at Miller Park in Milwaukee – which was to be the Brewers’ home opener for the season – has been postponed as part of a double game on Sunday.

It’s “in line with protocols to allow enough time for additional testing and contact tracing to be done,” the MLB said on Friday.

A Saturday match between the two clubs was still on the program at the start of Friday afternoon.

“We support Major League Baseball’s decision to postpone today’s game and look forward to playing our home opener as soon as conditions allow,” said David Stearns, general manager of the Brewers and president of baseball operations.

“The health and safety of our players and employees is, and will continue to be, our top priority,” said Stearns.

MLB Network was the first to report Friday’s postponement.

Marlins and Phillies also tested positive

Coronavirus-related postponements began after members of the Miami Marlins engaged with Covid-19 earlier this month.

MLB Phillies say two staff members tested positive for coronavirus after playing Marlins

After Miami opened the season against the Philadelphia Phillies last week, several Marlins players tested positive. Despite the results, both teams agreed to play the third game of the series on July 26.

Then other Marlins members tested positive and the Marlins’ season was suspended for at least Sunday.

A source within the Marlins told CNN that the squad has 21 members who tested positive for Covid-19 over the past week, 18 players and three coaches.

The Phillies have also seen several of their games postponed. First, because they had played the Marlins, Philadelphia’s games with the New York Yankees this week were postponed out of caution.

Then, Philadelphia’s games against the Toronto Blue Jays this weekend were postponed after two Phillies staff members tested positive.

MLB’s abridged season is played without fans and features new rules, including banning high-fives and spitting, to prevent spreading the virus.

Infected marlins head to Florida for further testing, source says

The 21 Marlins players and staff who tested positive were traveling on several sleeper buses to South Florida on Friday, where they will receive additional screening and testing, the team’s source told CNN.

Major League Baseball health officials approved the move, the source said.

The Marlins are self-isolating and self-quarantining at a team hotel in Philadelphia since their last game there on July 26. Members of the team who did not test positive remained in Philadelphia on Friday, the source said.

CNN’s Eric Levenson contributed to this report.
