After years of keeping an empty Instagram account, Donald Glover shares a photo to mark the start of filming on the long-awaited Atlanta season 3.
A photo from the set of Atlanta season 3 confirms that filming has started after a long delay. Created by Donald Glover, and premiering on FX in 2016, the series began its run by introducing Earnest “Earn” Marks (Glover) and his cousin Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry), better known as the rapper Paper Boi. Attempting to emerge as successes in the rap world, the duo find themselves in memorable and occasionally inexplicable situations. The same is true for Vanessa (Zazie Beetz) and Darius (Lakeith Stanfield), who have emerged as two of the breakout stars of Atlanta.
Atlanta season 2 finished back in May 2018, garnering critical acclaim and audience buzz. A third season was swiftly announced in June, with a season 4 renewal following in August. The plan was for both seasons to start filming in early 2020, eyeing a January 2021 release date, but production was postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation has improved since then, with reports emerging that Atlanta seasons 3 and 4 will be shot partially in Europe. Filming would start off in London, before moving on to Amsterdam and Paris. Now, we have our first glimpse from the set of the long-awaited third season.

After several years of maintaining an empty Instagram account, Glover posted a photo commemorating the beginning of production on Atlanta season 3. The post, which shows Glover with Henry, Beetz, and Stanfield, has a uniquely pixelated look to it. It led one commentor to wonder whether the photo was taken on an old Nokia phone. Atlanta season 2 ended with Earn and Alfred reaching an understanding as they are about to embark on a European tour, with Earn growing more decisive. Given that Atlanta’s next installments will shoot in cities like London, it looks likely that the upcoming episodes will continue that thread. While few story specifics are known at this point, it’s been noted that the delay has helped the writing process for the series. Considering the level of praise the dramedy has garnered, winning major awards and being routinely cited as one of the best creative offerings on television, it’s an encouraging sign for what the much-anticipated return will look like.
Although the show does have a few recurring narratives, including Earn’s changing relationship with Vanessa, the overall plots and themes tend to be much more episodic. This approach has led to standouts like “Teddy Perkins”, in which Glover portrays a character reminiscent of Michael Jackson, and “Woods” which partially focuses on Alfred’s mourning of his mother. If previous history is any indication, the wonderfully diverse and surreal aspects of Atlanta will be front and center.
