It’s old news that Netflix, with its seemingly limitless financial resources, has made it a regular part of its business to spend big bucks on the best talented, theatrical-caliber films, like Martin Scorsese’s. Irish or the recent hit assisted by quarantine Extraction. But a recently announced project for the platform led by Anthony and Joe Russo (architects of the last part of Marvel Avengers franchise) will have the biggest budget ever for a Netflix production: $ 200 million reported.
Deadline first broke the news that an action thriller spy story called The gray man, based on Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel, is set to begin filming early next year. Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, a frequent contributor to Russo, will star, and Joe Russo told Deadline that the brothers’ goal for the film “is for it to be competitive with any theatrical release.” with a view to starting a feature film franchise with the character of Gosling:
“The whole idea is to create a franchise and build a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it. We all got engaged in the first movie, and it must be great to bring us to the second movie. master assassins., and the characters of Gosling are burnt by the CIA and the character of Evans has to hunt him down. We have a great working relationship with Netflix, and we go back almost 20 years with Scott Stuber. We formed AGBO. to be an agnostic storytelling company, where we find the best platform. We think Netflix is the place for this movie. “
No release date for The gray man has been announced, and obviously the filming schedule is heavily conditional on what happens with COVID-19 in the United States over the next few months. But every time it comes out, it’s likely to be the most expensive original Netflix movie of all, and at $ 200 million far more expensive than most theatrical feature films.
