Smart home devices aren’t just for your home. There are intelligent grills, intelligent landscape lighting and even intelligent outdoor televisions. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on fancy new smart things for your porch or patio, you can still bring some of that Wi-Fi magic into your space with an outdoor smart plug.

To like

  • Works with Alexa and Google Assistant
  • Waterproof and weatherproof
  • Compact design

I do not like it

  • Just one socket
  • Not HomeKit compatible
  • Setting up is not always easy

The Braumm Outdoor Smart Plug works with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa for voice commands and integration into your preferred smart home platform. At $ 40 (but often available at a cheaper price), this is a mid-price option for homes with Google Assistant and Alexa technology. However, setup issues and an overwhelming app suggest it isn’t the best plug out there.

design

Smart outdoor plugs are a great way to hook up Christmas lights, decorations, bug zappers, electric lamps, speakers, and pretty much any plug-in outdoor device that you enjoy. By nature, they are functional and designed to withstand the elements. That usually means design aesthetics aren’t high on the priority list. I do not have a problem with that. Let’s face it, I just want a smart plug to work outdoors. If it looks good too, that’s a bonus.

Braumm definitely hasn’t made an effort in the looks department, and that’s okay. The bulky black box in which the intelligent socket is located is weatherproof. The Braumm Outdoor Smart Plug is compact and has mounting holes to attach it to the wall. It is designed to operate safely in temperatures from -4 ° F to 113 ° F.

Smarts

Braumm’s model only works with Google Assistant and Alexa for voice commands. If you are looking for a HomeKit compatible outdoor smart plug I refer you to the iDevices external switch. You can get a HomeKit-compatible dual-outlet plug for $ 49.

You can control the Braumm Outdoor Smart Plug via WLAN with the Braumm Mobile App for iOS or Android. There you will find options for a timer (oddly enough called “Left Time”) with which you can plan and create scenes with other Braumm devices. You can also turn on notifications if the plug goes offline for any reason.

In addition to status, timers, scheduling and scenes, the app also offers weather information, a practical addition to any outdoor device. You can add family members via email if you want someone else to download the Braumm app and share control of the point of sale.

Once you’ve set up an account and your device is online, connect to your Alexa or Google Home app by adding the brewing ability for Alexa, or log in to your brewing using the Home app. Account. For me, it took a couple of tries with resetting to get everything connected properly. The connector took a few tries to connect to my 2.4GHz WiFi and a few more to be recognized correctly by the Google Assistant and Alexa.

Close, but not quite

When connected, the plug responded to voice commands and app control. It turned on and off properly. The timer and scheduling options also worked as expected. Nevertheless, I felt overwhelmed by the Braumm Outdoor Smart Plug.

The app is fine, although some of the wording and instructions in English are not intuitive. The performance was acceptable, but I wanted two sockets and a shorter cord. A tricky setup experience, less than outstanding aesthetics, and the marginally expensive MSRP of $ 40 kept me looking for a better option.

I saw the $ 40 braumm on sale for only $ 18. If you catch a sale like this and need an outdoor outlet in no time, this will do. However, I would still choose the $ 50 twin socket iDevices external switch about this one. It’s also worth checking out the popular $ 25 TP-Link Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug. We haven’t reviewed TP-Link’s outdoor plug yet, but we’ve been more than happy with many of Kasa’s smart home products, including indoor electrical outlets and plugs.
