Wow, indeed. Fortunately, each candidate who was eliminated managed his defeat with grace. Makayla, for example, wrote on Instagram: “Stay true to yourself and never give up”, while Sophia called her American Idol trip “a nice ride”, and thanked the judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie for their support and “wisdom”.

Of course, saying goodbye to talented candidates is the least fun part of Idol. Then again, the funniest part is about to come – aka the time when a new American Idol is crowned champion.

From what we heard, the remote control Idol Sunday’s finale (which begins at 8 p.m. ET) will be nothing short of an epic. After a double elimination, the five finalists with the highest number of public votes will perform twice as much and the vote in real time will determine the winner.

Between all this madness, Lionel, Katy and Luke will team up with the past Idol candidates – including Alejandro Aranda, Jordin Sparks, Hardy wool, and Ruben Studdard – for a special performance of the inspiring hymn “We Are the World”. Luke will also perform his single “One Margarita” and Katy will offer the television debut of her next single, “Daisies”, according to Billboard.

As you can see, there are still so many reasons to get excited on Sunday evening … so why dwell on the past?
