Botox has been a staple part of cosmetic surgery for about 15 years, being used to address wrinkles. It is made of botulinum toxin type A, which is what also causes food poisoning. However, in small and heavily diluted quantities, it can be injected under the skin safely, where it relaxes the muscles.

How Does Botox Work?

When you search for the best Botox Orange County has to offer, you need to first understand what it can do. Basically, chemicals in our body make the facial muscles tense, which cause lines and wrinkles. Botox stops these signals from working so that the muscle is weakened, smoothing the appearance of the skin. It does not actually paralyze the muscles of the face, in other words.

Why Should I Get Botox?

If you have a lot of frown lines, crows’ feet or wrinkles, then you may want to consider Botox treatment. Although generally used around the forehead and eyes, it can also be used around the mouth. It gently relaxes the facial muscles but continues to allow for normal facial expression like frowning and smiling. Deep creases and lines caused through sun damage do not benefit from Botox treatment.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox treatment has been tried and tested for many years and is absolutely safe when done properly by a trained physician. However, breastfeeding or pregnant women should not opt for this treatment, nor should anyone with a muscle or nerve disease. Additionally, some antibiotics react to Botox, including those given to people with Alzheimer’s, heartbeat irregularities and myasthenia gravis. Hence, you should always consult a doctor first, also to check if you have any allergies.

How Does Treatment Work?

After discussing your medical history and deciding where the injections should be placed, Botox will be injected into your muscles with a very thin needle. You do not require any anesthetic for this. It will only take a few minutes for the treatment to be complete.

How Long Is Recovery?

Botox is often referred to as the “lunchtime face lift”, as you can literally return to your normal activities straight after work. You may experience a slight headache and it is often recommended to not lie down for around four hours. You shouldn’t rub the area for around 24 hours. You can expect to see results within one week and it should last for around six months.

What about Side Effects

Some mild side effects have been reported, including headaches. These are most common after the first treatment. You may also have very slight bruising. Rarely, Botox can cause ptosis, but this should correct itself reasonably quickly. The rarest side effect is an allergic reacting. This will manifest itself as a rash and most people will also have difficulty swallowing and breathing. This is a medical emergency and you should seek assistance straight away.

If done properly, Botox is a perfectly safe procedure. Make sure that you go to see a qualified physician if you are considering having it done.
