Here are some of the best tips from locals on how to get the most out of your New York trip.

Use The Subway

New York is infamous for its constant traffic.  Attempting to rent a car and drive it around in New York is pretty much either asking to get in an accident or have a panic attack from road rage.  True locals know that the best way to get from one point of town to the other  is by taking public transportation

You’ll see all sorts of people on the subway.  From famous movie stars to people who make a living playing music in the streets.

SEMrush

It’s something that everyone uses because of how efficient it is and for its reasonable price.  Make sure to grab a subway map when you arrive and try to familiarise yourself with the lines.  This way you won’t drive a local crazy standing in front of them in line at the subway trying to figure out where you’re going.

Tip Your Servers and Bartenders

If there’s one thing that locals of New York hate its tourists who don’t leave a tip after eating or drinking in their establishment.  Not leaving a tip is sure to create an uproar amongst employees

Some servers will go to the point of chasing you down the street if you dare not leave them a tip after drinking or eating in their restaurant.

As a general rule of thumb, 15 to 25% is standard, although most people will agree that 20% is appropriate.

Share The Sidewalk

One thing that New York locals hate is when tourists come and take up the entire side dawdling looking at sights.  They also dislike when pedestrians are holding hands and aimlessly walking, blocking the way for people being able to pass.

New York is a fast-paced environment where people are coming and going from all different directions. If there is one thing that a true New Yorker hates, its someone getting in their way.  Therefore, it’s essential to know the rules of the road.

Local New Yorkers know that if you’re walking slowly or planning on standing still, you stick to the right.  But if you’re on the move, you pass to the left.
