Search the Internet, and you will find many dismissive articles about CBD oil, and they tend to say similar things. Skeptics usually argue that CBD is overhyped and lacks scientific data to prove its alleged medical benefits.
In reality, CBD has many health benefits, and plenty of science backs those claims. If you are thinking about trying CBD oil, it’s essential to know some of the most common myths about CBD below.
Myth: CBD Hasn’t Been Proven To Benefit Health
CBD skeptics often claim that the compound has never been proven to help any medical problems. They may say that anecdotal evidence suggests CBD can help this or that health problem, but there’s no proof.
However, the belief that CBD hasn’t been shown to help health conditions isn’t true. FDA recently approved Epidolex, a medication based on CBD to treat severe seizure disorders. It’s the first CBD-based drug to get FDA approval since the agency made cannabis a Schedule 1 drug in 1970.
A Schedule 1 drug is defined as one with no medical value, but the FDA approval of this seizure drug proves otherwise.
Myth: It’s a Schedule 1 Drug, So Little Research Has Been Done On CBD
This myth has two parts. The first part regards research in the US. Cannabis is a Schedule 1 drug, so it’s hard to research CBD in the United States. But some universities in the US have been approved to research cannabis.
For instance, Columbia University conducted a study that reviewed using CBD to treat glioblastoma. Glioblastoma is one of the most common malignant brain tumors in adults. Standard treatment includes chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. The clinical study showed that CBD helped with malignant cell death and boosted the tumors’ radio sensitivity, not healthy cells.
The study suggested that CBD killed and weakened malignant cells without killing normal cells.
There also is an argument that no clinical research has been performed on CBD. This isn’t true. Plenty of research has been done outside the US, and the federal government funds some of it.
Israel was the first nation to research medical cannabis, and additional studies have been done in the UK, Brazil, and Italy. A UK study in 2018 showed promising results using CBD oil to treat ulcerative colitis. And a 2014 Italian study suggested CBD can interfere with colon cancer cell growth.
None of the research shows that CBD is a cure for cancer, anxiety, or anything else. But serious, double-blind clinical trials have been performed.
Myth: It’s All A Marketing Scam
The health and wellness industry tries to make as much money as possible, and it’s used CBD to do that. That’s why CBD oil is used in many wellness and cosmetic products with questionable benefits. But some unneeded uses of CBD don’t mean that all CBD products have no health benefits.
For example, tea tree oil has known antibacterial properties. If the health and wellness industry sees consumers like tea tree oil and begins to put it in cosmetics, people may question the benefit.
They might think that tree oil is just another marketing scam. But it doesn’t change the fact that tea tree oil DOES have proven antibacterial properties. It only means you probably don’t need it in your eyeliner.
So, it’s true that CBD isn’t needed in every product that has it. But it still has legitimate purposes.
