When cold and flu season rolls around, many people feel that it makes sense to avoid going to places where many people congregate. The ideas behind this way of thinking revolve around trying to stay away from as many potentials for getting sick as possible. While this appears to be sound logic. Beth Howard, a contributor to the Wall Street Journal, reports that a study conducted by Carnegie Mellon found that this may not actually be the safest bet.

This study concluded that when a group of people was all exposed to the same cold virus. Those who had larger social networks were less likely to get sick than those who lead more secluded lives. This may be due, in part, to these people being exposed to more germs on a daily basis. Therefore, developing more immunities to fight off illness. So if you’re worried about getting a cold or the flu, don’t limit yourself too much from your normal outings.

While you can and should still conduct your life as normal during cold and flu season, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take some precautions. Suz Redfearn, a contributor to WebMD.com, writes that one of the keys to avoiding getting sick is keeping things clean and sanitary. Some items you may want to consider sanitizing at least once a day. Include stair railings in your building, doorknobs, light switches, elevator buttons, computer accessories, and your phone. These items are all big germ carriers, so be careful when handling them during this time of year.
